Running Bad

I have an old 61" Great Dane Surfer with a 22hp Kohler. It seems to run fine except when I engage the blades. Then it has no power and runs like it is on one cylinder. Could this be electric clutch related?? I checked the air and fuel filters, plugs and fuel quality. Any help would be appreciated.

Had that problem once, ended up being a bad choke link. Choke never fully disengaged. While you're at it, try cleaning the carb and see if that helps any.

Mastermower, Did the engine rev up and down without a load?

Generally when it roams up and down that indicates a lean running engine so you may want to check that all intake retaining bolts are tight and nothing is loose.....

Was the engine apart recently where a gasket could have been left out or anything for that matter??????

You didnt mention the year other then its old so you may be able to richen up the carburetor to get rid of the up and down roaming sound because that alone would drive me crazy and if 1 clyinder is running lean you would basically only be running on 1 cylinder as you described..........

Can't remember, but I don't think so. Is your revving up and down? Clean the carb and install a carb rebuild kit (they're cheap). Sounds to me like a float problem??

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I am going to look it over good tonight. Yes it does rev up and down all the time when there is no load on the engine, and it is one of the very early Surfer models. The engine does not even have a fuel pump!! Probably older than me. HAHA
I will keep you all informed.
Thanks again

I finally broke down and took it to someone who knows more about them than I do. I let you know what it was when I get it back.

Hello everyone. Just got the Great Dane back. Carb needed rebult and was full of dirt. Muffler was shot, baffles were loose inside, runs like new.
