  • Download: Fundimentals of Landscape Design

Before I attended college I never could find a good resource teaching the ropes of landscape design. Below you will find several links for publications written by K-State Research and Extension. Essentially the topics below are all you'll need for a good foundation on the fundimentials of basic landscape design. Please keep in mind that some of the topics included in these publications are written for Kansas and may need to be altered to better suit your states climate. I'd recommend downloading and printing off each article and keeping each in one three ring binder for future reference. If you have free time, (who does though?) practice your design skills with measuring off property (your own, maybe a part of a public park) and try to deisgn a landscape for it. Good designers are not born overnight. It will take countless hours of practice before you get the hang of it. Hope this is of help to many of you.

        where to learn landscaping?

I would like to learn alot about landscaping, college is not a option, Im already getting a degree in something else and I cant take the classes, are their any good training programs or online classes that arent a joke, I would like to eventually do landscaping also and I want to know what im doing before I try to do work for other people.

C Wooden - If you prefer not to take courses in horticulture/landscape design then the next best thing would to read up on university extension publications such as the ones I posted links too above.

There are also many good books out there which are very valuable resources as well. Many good landscape designers actually keep a collection of books/magazines with good landscape pictures just for inspiration for thier designing.

You could also buy the same textbooks used college courses.
Some of the landscaping related textbooks I have studied from are:
            *Manual of Woody Landscape Plants
            *Manual of Herbaceous Landcsape Plants
            *Professional Landscape Management
            *Dirrs Hardy Trees and Shrubs
            *The Biology of Horticulture
            *Residential Landscape Architecture
            *Landscape Construction
            *Landscape Graphics
            *Introduction to Landscape Design

However, as much as one may learn from books, they will not realize how much they do not know unless they take courses in this subject area.

You can also gain a lot of insight and knowledge just from working for a local landscaping firm.

            Good luck.
