I'm bored at work again today so here's another helper! This is what I give out to users here at work to keep their PC's running faster with less problems that I typed up a while back.
General Personal Computer Maintenance
(For optimal performance, PC maintenance should be done at least once per month)
Windows 98
Booting into “Safe Mode†(This helps when working on PC's because all the programs aren't running in the background)
1. Turn the computer completely off.
2. Turn the computer on.
3. Immediately hold down the left “CTRL†key and continue holding until...
4. A Windows 98 Boot Menu should come up.
5. Select option 3. Boot into Safe Mode
Should this menu not come up, turn off the computer and try again.
Once PC maintenance is complete, restart the computer by going to Start… Shutdown… Choose Restart.. It should boot normally.
Cleaning up Temporary Files
1. Double Click on the “My Computer†icon on the desktop
2. Right-Click on the C: Drive
3. Choose “Propertiesâ€
4. At the bottom of this window, there is a “Disk Cleanup†button. Click it.
5. Check all of the boxes (tmp files, temp internet files, etc.) and Click “OKâ€.
Running Scan Disk (Cannot use PC while Scan Disk is running)
6. Once disk cleanup is complete, Click on the “Tools†tab.
7. Click on the “Check Now…†button. Type of Test should be “Standardâ€. Check the “Automatically Fix Errors†box.
8. Click “OKâ€
Running Defrag (Cannot use PC while Defrag is running)
9. Once Scan Disk is complete, click on the “Defragment Now…†button.
10. Defragmenter will begin running and when finished, you can exit the program. (This program will take a while to run. Suggested that you do this after hours while the PC is not in Use)
Windows 2000
You can use the same Disk Cleanup tool in Win 2K and also Scan Disk and Defragmenter. The main difference is.. You don't want to boot into "Safe Mode".
Once again, I hope this helps someone.
