  • exmark tthp problem

my 48" (3 years old) started making noises yesterday. today they got louder. they only occur sometimes. after further checking, they are coming from the left wheel. all belts are good and everything stays greased. this only happens while moving and sounds like a car with bad brakes, a loud shreiking sound. mower turns fine and has hydro fluid. other than the sound everything is fine. anybody have any thoughts? jack d, it is time to shine. lol.

I am assuming you are referring to the rear wheel. The only thing that comes to mind is that the bearings in the wheel motor may be going bad. Or, is the wheel rubbing against something on the frame?

Steve, pull the wheel on that side, on my o5, had 2 of the bolts loosen that hold the wheel drive (hydro motor, in place. Sometimes, it would be worse in reverse. I hope that helps.....

Jack D. agrees with member sjessen. One other possibility is that there is air in the system. Please follow procedures to Bleed.

        Good Luck.

I agree, first things first, remove the wheel and check the snugness of all hardware.

If that doesn't work, perhaps a bearing is out?

I'd find it hard to believe the noise is from air in the system....but if so, just bleeding the system would only be a temporary fix since somehow the air got in there to begin with.

As the machines age, wheel motors tend to groan a little bit, on my 03, they do some.

i had a problem 2 years ago with loose bolts. that time though i had play in the wheel. no play this time but i'll still check it today. i also talked to exmark and they asked me a bunch of questions but couldn't really offer anything. they did say the motors and pumps begin to whine with age but that isn't the sound i got.

                FOLLOW UP......

i am bad cause i didn't pull the wheel off till today after mowing. here is the deal. no loose bolts on the wheel motor. there was alot of mud caked on where i ran in a ditch a few weeks ago. i cleaned that off and put some lubricant on it . i ran the mower while jacked up and bingo, no noise. i let it down with the weight of the mower and the same problem. bad wheel motor i guess????????? this late , i will run her till she blows.

Air in system maybe. Jack up rear & run for several minutes to work it out, seems unlikely though. Any up & down play in the wheel motor?
