I have an old STIHL FS56. The pinion set is shot. Stihl want $125 for the pinion set and that does not include bearings. I cannot justify spending $200 on this old unit. However, I got it running perfect.
The local dealers are unable to help and so I took it up with STIHL directly. Essentially, I would like to get a new head that will fit the 24.0 mm tube.
Here is my email exchange with STIHL. Maybe someone else can help me.
STIHL's response is the last sentence of each item below.
1. I am looking for the model number from another unit that will fit the FS56. There are numerous models. One has to fit. Can you give me model numbers of a STIHL string trimmer/brush cutter that will fit a 24.0mm tube? There are none that fit.
2. The pinion set number called out for a FS56 is 4114 640 7300. The pinion set 4124 640 7300 is much more readily available for less than 1/2 the cost. There is only 1 digit difference. What does this digit mean? I've dealt with many German equipment manufacturers and I know that they will simply change a digit, especially one in the first set, for something like who manufactured it, or on what piece of equipment it was manufactured on, the lot size that they are produced in. Typically, the final digits represent a dimensional or material specification change. These digits are the same. Maybe you have access to the detailed prints to compare the two. The 4114 is the series number. 4124 is an entirely different series.
3. The gear head assembly used on the FS56 is 4121 640 0100. What other models use this head? That only fits the FS65.
4. What other models use pinion set 4114 640 7300? No other unit. It was unique to that trimmer.
