county tax collector wants inventory of my stuff?

I just received "small business listing" form from my county tax office. It looks like they want a dollar value of all my equipment etc..related to my business. Is this unique to my county or is this common? Do most of you do this yourself or have an accountant do it? It looks totally confusing. Do they want a value for each rake, shovel, trimmer etc...? Its due Jan. 31st or a penalty shall be imposed. I can't wait until I have enough accounts so that I can hand over all this stuff to an accountant. Anyone know a good accountant in Union County NC?

They want an Inventory of all your Business Items so they can tax you on it...

I've been paying taxes on a $50 cash register & $50 filling cabinet since 1992, I love it, NOT

You would be better off letting your Accountant touch as little of your stuff as possible or maybe you need to write off that $100 to $200 an hour labor they charge.

I know there's quite a few that will disagree with me, but I only let my Accountant do my taxes at the end of the year & every once in a while I ask him a question and that's too much as far as I'm concerned.

I've been audited twice in my life & I'm Damn proud of that, I've been self employed for over 20 years & I've been working legally (Over 18) for over 32 years.

If you still have extra money you don't need I do have a paypal account that needs filling up again!

On the Inventory, just be honest & fair. Don't over value your stuff, because you will be paying for it as long as it's on that sheet. Show me a $20 shovel New that's worth over $8 used & I'll show you a Goat with Windshield Wipers on his Azz!

I also received a request from the county tax office for the value of my equipment and just ignored it. They placed thier value on it, you do not want that, they think more of your equipment than you do. I valued my equipment at what I would pay for it in its present condition. The tax rate is so low it is not worth being penalized for undervaluing your equip. For my area it was approx. $40.00 per $1000.00

I don't mind putting a fair value on my stuff if the darn form wasn't so complicated to figure out. They should have just written it in chinese.

Nika, those rates seem very high to me.


As Grassmaster stated, don't let your own ego step in and overprice the stuff so you feel like you have a lot of tools. You're just going to be taxed that much more.

I'm very slow driver compared to most. I've been driving over 34 years & one speeding ticket, that was thrown out of court. The Jerk gave me a Ticket for driving 56 mph in a 55 mph zone. I almost got arrested for Obstruction of Justice and that stupid ticket, I ran that police officer through the verbal meat grinder...

(LOL, I've never had to clean a bug off my windshield in my life, I'm that Slow!)

All I wanted him to do was let me get back in my truck & him catch me going 65mph in a 55mph zone at least that makes since? LOL what made me so mad was he said he would have to give me 2 tickets... I decided since I was from out of town that we needed to go see the judge ASAP.

After I pleaded my case to the Judge (He thought it was funny) but the police officer was mad as hell at me & kept mouthing off at me in front of the Judge. The judge threw it out of court!

Gee I had my cruise control set on 55mph & I was going downhill. I asked the officer did he have a permit for carrying his gun, he didn't like that one bit & what shoved him over the edge was I told him that I had a badge just like his that I got out of a box of Cracker Jacks! I didn't mean to make him mad?

It sure paid off making him mad at me! I work retail & repairs with many unhappy power equipment owners. I can hold my mud very well under fire! I get called in to the shop a lot between about April & October to handle problems.

You watch Pulp Fiction? When they call me it's like Breaking "The Gimp" out of his box! I dress & look like him too except I'm shorter, fatter & wear a Stetson Straw Hat!

YEAP i GOT ONE TOO

GOT the suprise of my life the other day when I went to mail box and had a notice from my tax aprasial dist wasn't even the right name do not know where they got that name proply out of the cracker jack box ths is the same idots that I caught sitting in the ditch outside my house taking pictures and writing **** down told her that if she wanted to get some good pictures come on in the back yard and take pictures of the tar paper I have over a couple of windows then I got to looking at all the additions she had down on extras I had in my house she said I had carpet , central heat and air 2 bathrooms and some other crap told her that I did not have anything that she had listed and that she did not need to be like a Gestopolice and spy on me that if she wanted to know what I had in my house just f-----in ask to come in do not sit out in ditch. reasoning being is my wifes ex did that crap cause we had a treaspassing order againist him and we get nervos when a strange vehicle sits out side as her ex has said that we both would end up dead with that in mind you might get shot at first and questions ask later .Some people get upset at how high health insurance is and how little it pays . Me it is the local tax gestapo if they would put it in the sales tax then everybody would pay their fair share even those who rent. Here in Texas renters do not pay county taxes or school taxes only property owners or at least in this county that is the way it is Called my tax advisor and he said best thing I could do was to say very little and just fill form out and smile at them said just think of them walking down main street and the bottom of their pants is out and that they do not know that their butt is showing and they are clueless as to wht people are laughing at as they go past I chuckle just thiinking about it

i got mine yesterday. so guys, how detailed are you with the list? just mowers and trimmers or do you go crazy with everything you bought? my county gives you a percentage listing for the age of your equipment so you just put the new price and match it with the age of it.

my accountant does mine. they can request a copy of your tax forms and see what equipment you bought and wrote off your income tax. if you cheat the fine is very high
