  • Flyers door-to-door vs. stuffing in paper

I was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with both the door to door method of distributing flyers vs. having your flyer stuffed and distributed in a local paper.

What are the differences in success rate? I am sure that door to door has a higher success rate but I can get so many more out at one time in the local paper. I would be very happy with a 1% success rate with stuffing. Do you think I could get at least that?

It would cost about $300-$350 to print and distribute to about 3000 homes. Maybe less if I do the folding and stuffing myself.

If you got just one account would it not be worth it?

I've tried both, and door to door flyers get the best response:at least 2% (sometimes 3%!) whereas the flyers in newspaper was less than 1%. Of course I'm more selective with the flyers and they take more time therefore the cost is more (unless one has nothing better to do). I'm finding there is no "easy" way, but I like delivering flyers because I can be selective and it is good exercise.

I personally would not expect 1%, but anything is possible. (many variables--location, design, size, demographics . . .)

Newspaper here is very expensive. Most homes are vacant, so can not do fliers as it spells VACANCY to any passeby wanting to peek inside. Fliers and solicitation are also not permitted in private communities. Putting fliers on car windows are also a big no-no here. Can get you in a lot of trouble. I do send out mailers to the people who I want to get and have vinyl signage on the back window of my truck and both side windows as well as both side windows on my wife's JEEP. I have a very good core list right now and the word of mouth has been great for me.

There is a site that I can go to and get the homepowner's information. I use this site to target the ones I want in the areas I want. I got this site from a realtor for this purpose. He told us that in most places there is a site like this and it is all public information from the county assessors office. It is called GIS, Geographic Information System, County maps and geographic data. If you want to target certain homes that are not occupied year round, which is the case out here, I use it to get their mailing adress.

            Hi Watkinslawnservice,

The more people you meet going door to door, the better the chances of you standing out from others. They will see that you are a nice guy and they will want you take care of their yard.
