You need insurance for your equipment and customers and employees for the same reasons you need insurance for your car and the people that ride in that car and those of us that are a risk because humans are in control. You need a licsence because the US Gov. wants to control your life. You can't be unlicsenced because you can't be trusted. It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong or cost you a lot of money. Your going to do it or you will not be in business. Plan on it, get over it and move on. If you feel you can't deal with it then you should reconsider and go work for the man. My question for you is this. Why wouldn't you want to protect your self, your employees and your customers?

Michigan doesn't need licenses unless you are working with chemicals or buying from a nursery. Each state has different regulations. Check them out on your State website.

As far as insurance goes, it better to be safe than sorry. People sue for crazy and ridiculous things these days. Insurance gives you a safety net to fall back on. If you never need it, you are lucky. But you do, you will be a lot worse off if someone sues you for all you've got and you had nothing to back you.

I'm just guessing that Michigan is like Tennessee. To do business you are required to obtain a Business License. This is not a major expence (including the Tang Prop Tax) but it keeps you legal ( here anyway). Sometimes a small business expence really catches the customer's attention.
