  • Please Help With Bid!

Just went and looked at a clean up/mulch job this evening. The guy wants his beds cleaned and mulched. There is a total of 2021 sq. ft of beds that are a mess. I figured 12 hrs total for the job and 13 yrds of red mulch. The bid Im coming up with is 1935.00 for mulch and clean up. What do you guys think. the beds wrap around the house, some areas have many bushes and some is wide open. Hope some of you can help out here. Thanks!

After leaving money on the table with my last cleanup and mulch bid, I think I'd bid $2500 - $2750 on that, depending on how much time it's going to take you to clean up. We've decided to bid mulching jobs based on $1.00 - 1.25 per Sq/ft of garden, with materials included. We're putting in 3" of mulch though, and it sounds like you're only doing 2" so your price may be about right for that.

yes, I priced the mulch at 2". I think 2 inches should be enough to cover. The old mulch is pretty much gone and mostly dirt in areas.

Just for the hell of it round it off to 1400 for a nice round number and take your significant other out to dinner that night. Other than that Iwould say that the bid is dead on.

We would be around $1300 as well. Unless it was real bad. Then we would be around $1500.

It will take you longer than 12 man hours total.

I should have explained better. I figured 12 hrs with 3 people for a total of 36 man hrs. I estimated high so I wouldnt burn myself.

Now it's a whole different ballgame. There is a HUGE difference between 12 and 36 man/hours.

Ok, for me, here is how it would go. The mulch would be $100.00 a cubic yard installed. I would be putting in 3 inches if the old stuff was mostly gone though, not 2 inches.

36 hours total. 12 hours for mulch installation, plus mulch, $1,200.00
24 hours for cleanup at $45.00=$1,080
                            The total here is $2,280.00

BUT..... Are you hauling debris away? How long will that take? What is the dump charge? Is the customer going to be happy with 2 inches of mulch? I would try and get the OK for 3 inches of mulch, which would up the mulch side to $1,800, for a total of $2,880.00 Then I would throw in a few hundred dollars of profit for the company as well. If this is a one time gig, make sure you charge enough for it. If you can get other DESIREABLE work out of this client, then you can offer a bit of a break in return for that work. "If you sign up with us for our total lawn care package for the season, we can give you a discount of $200.00 on this cleanup", something like that.

Okay, forget my last post. 36 hours is a big difference. I'd be right around Woody's numbers.
