  • Is it illegal not to have insurance for mowing?

    Hello,
I plan on joining the lawn industry. Right now, I am starting off and want to know how things are like before I make big purchases and go big. Is it against the law not to have insurance? Of course, if my business goes big, I am wanting to get insurance but as of right now, I want to spend what money I have to buy equipment and advertising.

No it is probably not against the law.....HOWEVER you will need to have insurance to aquire (or even bid) commerial properties. Have you checked into insurance for liability it isn't too expensive. What is your business plan, and what is your experience level? Do you have a plan in place, What equipment do you think you need, what size are your lots? I would encourage you to use the search function above to check out the information.

Good Luck!!! Welcome to The fourm.

Thanks for your reply. Right now, I am not interested in commercial properties. I am looking forward to residentials. My family owns rental properties and I mow them occasionally. That is about the only experience I have. I am slowly learning to do everything correctly. I don't plan on starting my business until Spring of 2006 because I want to put a lot of time into planning and learning. Can you tell me where I can get a quote online for insurance for this time of business? and also, where can I purchase commercial equipments? Thanks!

Your profile says whictia, Ks so I am positive there are several commerical equipment dealers. Stick with a brand that has great customer support. Good for you for not rushing in. A well construed plan will yield the best results for you. I read your other posts, Glad to see ambition on your part. Most of my college career was supported though lawn care. It can be done, your town is large enough to support your cause. As far as insurance, see if your automobile ins. company does liability for business. Or go by one of you local independent Ins. agents and get several quotes. Set up a business, you can do it anytime, but the earlier the better. Get a good CPA/tax person on retainer who works with small business (best results). Again don't hurry, get it right first.

P.S. Your State Sucks to Drive across, did it yesterday, all the way. It sucked. Sorry

I hate to tell you this but if you don't have insurance and you damage something expensive you get to pay. Further more, if you hit have an accident in your work truck, your insurance will not cover you without commericial coverage. Don't try to cut corners that shouldn't be cut!

What are some things that normally gets damage on a residential worksite?

When you first started out at ground zero, do you purchase insurance even if you don't have any customers? What do you do? Currently I have about $2000 saved up with no job. But by Spring of 2006, I should have about $5k by asking for loans from family members. I do not have any equipment. Meaning, no truck, no mower, no trimmer, no blower, no nothing. I'm starting from the very bottom. What do you suggest I ought to do to start off? Thanks.

Keep saving until your ready to start actually working. Then get an insurance policy, business license (or DBA certificate), priviledge license (if needed), business checking account, and equipment. I wouldn't get anything until your ready to get started then get what you need for residential size lawns and if your fortunate to have commercial properties you can assess what equipment you'll need and you'll have the $ to go get it. The insurance is important because you could sling a rock from your mower or trimmer into an expensive window or worst, a kids eye. When bidding properties make sure the potential client knows your licensed and insured which helps justify your bids.

The first thing I would do is go find a job and make some money instead of asking for loans from family members. You are going to need more than 5 grand to start this business, unless you plan on being the dirtbag running around lowballing just to get the work

Well, I have insurance to protect me from loosing everything I've got. But since you've got nothing to loose, I guess you don't need insurance.

Being in Greensboro, I would guess you pay high premiums for the insurance that pays when your equipment is ripped off?
