I am attempting to step into lawn service full time this season. I have purchased the equipment and delivered flyers for residential work. I am wondering about becoming licensed/insured in Delaware and also about bidding on large commercial jobs (how to). Any key pointers on the transition from "A guy with a mower" to "a professional lawn service company"?

You can get your biz lic. from the DE Division of Revenue. I reccommend Thomas J. Hornung & associates for insurance, I use them and am very happy with price, service, and quality of coverage. They are on Philadelphia Pike # is 302-764-1000.

Good Luck, I grew up in that area and there are lots of landscape Co's up there, which is why I operate in Southern DE.

You'll need at least $1 million in liability insurance to do commercial......not that expensive...at least not in Maryland thru Erie Insurance...mine is $400 per year.

ALso, you should make sure your vehicle is on a commercial policy.......many PERSONAL insurance policies exclude commercial use....so double check that!

Form a LLC (Limited Liability Company).....it was easy to do in Marylend...proboably pretty easy in DE also. It gives your personal assets some protection from litigation that might result from your business.

Write a BUSINESS PLAN......be realistic about goals.....and determine your REAL operating costs and how much you WANT or NEED to earn to make a living. THen you can determine what you will need to charge.

Keep reading threads on this sight.....and asking qwuestions....you will get very smart about the business very quickly on here.....but you have to implement what you learn.

      Good luck!
