Hey guys. I hear and see a lot of ads with "Licensed and Insured," or License # ********. What does it take to get a business license. I have mailed the state of florida to get my fictitious name registration, and have contacted the city i live in for a license to run a "home-based" business. Are these all I need? I'm not doing landscape design, fertilization, or anything special. I'm just doing maintenance and clean-up. What do i do to get a business license?

Licensed pretty much means you've registered with the required authorities (State and or county/city) as a legal business entity and as such, you are required to pay all of your business taxes and license fees, comply with business laws, etc.
Not sure what the requirements are in Florida but if you've registered with the state and they've given you an ID number, you're probably on the right track. Just call your local county clerk, tell them what you've filed so far and they should be able to tell you if there is anything else you need to do.
Congratulations on making the right choice to get legally licensed. It will pay off in the end. I've found most state websites have walkthrough instructions on how to incorporate a business. Florida's site is: www.state.fl.us
Best Regards,
Jason

here...
It is NOT required to license a "labor only" business w/city. I do not "sell" any products. (Want mulch? You buy I'll fly!) You have to be insured (not bonded BUT I am as it is CHEAP and will pay for itself if needed... I WAS an outlaw once and who knows what will happen tomorrow?!?!) But I licensed business too here in my small village and at a cheaper fee for "service providers" (NO not THOSE services pervs!). Most business I do is in Joplin but my business is in a small suburb and Joplin does not require the license.

Ohhhh
I registered ficticious name w/State Secretary. County license is NOT the same as city license either. No county license required here to mow. You need to check w/all cities you mow in just to cover your arse as well as check w/county clerk about county license for each county you work in too!
I went through these steps in this order.
1.) Checked on licensing. State, city and county.
2.) Registered name @ Secretary of States office.
3.) Purchased insurance and bond from my family insurance agent.
4.) Printed business materials including "licensed, bonded and insured" as I am now and the elders eat that stupid lil' phrase up as it means "legit" here! (Anyone could fake this UNTIL you get caught but I ain't quite that fried yet!)
That was it. Wish Rather Be Bassin' was thought through a bit more before I registered it but so far folks think it is funny and the ladies say it is "Cute"! Juvenile but a stated fact! I would RATHER BE BASSIN'!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya know bassin is a lot like business. Your fishing the waters for the big lunker bass. You choose the right lure, cast it where the lunkers are hangin then crank for the strike. Ya set the hook, adjust the drag and play the bass for all its worth. When you wear em down... you land the big trophy bass and put em on the stringer with the rest of your gigs.Sodbuster®

You may find that your state will use your SSN# as your tax id #. That's what Kentucky does when you register your business as a sole proprietor. I'm just not sure if that's what Florida does.Originally posted by rustyt22when i got my fictitious name from the state, they didnt give me any kind of number.
