I am going to start my business in the most legitimate fashion possible, and that means liability insurance is a must. The first year of operation will be part-time, servicing about forty small homes. How much insurance should I get for such a small business?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Paul: Your agent will advise you, but a GL minumum of 300/600, and look at 500/1,000 as the cost to increase limits is generally reasonable. Don't forget the auto insurance also! If you have more assets to protect, go higher and consider a $1 million umbrella. Some commercial accounts may require the $1 million. JD

I think it does not matter if you have 10 accounts or 50 accounts. Sit down with a good Independent insurance agent, and let the agent work something out for you. Also if you have someone helping you, let the agent know, the coverage for a part time employee is not that much.

Coverage is not hat expensive considering the risks of not having the coverage. I presently have a policy that I picked up when I only had 10 to 12 accounts. It was set up for 85% green industry and 15% home repair/handiman type work for up to 3 employees. $500,000 is what I have and runs around $700-750 a year. I will be increasing my coverage to double, $1,000,000.00, next month when it is time to renew for only about $75.00 more a year.

This maybe an old thread but to benefit the viewers of this forum, I suggest you shop for insurance online. I checked on the net found it to be easier. So for those who are in a similar situation as avelli2000, go online when shopping for insurance. The place I went to is www.insurancepaylite.com they were able to give a quote that was acceptable to me in the speediest time. Anyways hope this helps you guys.

ONE lawsuit from the 10 accounts could bankrupt you. IS saving a few hundred bucks worth that?
