  • Putting flyers on mailboxes

Has anyone ever ran into problems sticking a folded flyer in between the mailbox and the flag on it. I have been doing this for a couple of years now without a problem, but I have heard it is illegal. I don't want to get in trouble for it. This past weekend, I noticed that one of the politicians in my area had used tape and stuck his flyers to the top of mailboxes with it. It would be much easier for me to use the mailbox method I have been using rather than a door knob, since all of the mailboxes in the neighborhoods I go to are by the street.

Actually, I work for the Post Office full time and I'm looking at starting a small lawn service part time. It is illegal to put anything IN a mailbox that is not delivered by a postal employee with proper postage. The outside of the box can be tricky, because technically you are tampering with the box, however, if nobody complains, then nothing will be done about it. If someone were to complain, the most that you would probably get would be a call to your business asking you to stop. The Postal Inspectors have a lot bigger fish to fry than you and your flyers. The mailman might be annoyed though. HAHA

I've done it before in the DC area. Some customers do not like it. I haven't personally checked with the Post Office but I think it's legal because I'm usually sticking it under the flag along with a Domino's Pizza flyer. I would assume a company that large has checked the laws.

Tahnks for clearing up about the mailbox. I am getting ready to put out flyers and was wondering the same thing. Does this seem to be the best way or does anyone have some more effective ways.

              Wormy,
I have found flyers to be very effective in that they cost very little and you can concentrate an area with them. One thing you may wan to try that I found effective was offering multiple neighbor discounts. When you hit an entire neighborhood a few times with flyers, a lot of the neighbors will want to use the same company. Offering a discount for them will ensure a few calls. Newspaper ads work well also, but will leave you with some serious travel time.

I had great success getting my business started with this method. I plan on doing it again when or if it ever slows up here. We would fold half sheets in half and place them in the doors crack, not in mailboxes though. Honor the No Soliciting signs, be very kind, and bring some music! Lou, where are ya at in Florida?
