  • New Lawn Care Starter: low budget

I need some help to start my new business...

I just got out of highschool and I am looking to start a lawn business. I pracitcally have nothing. I have 3 push mowers and a plug-in blower, trimmer, and edger. I plan to buy more within 3 months of the service(if successful). Does anyone have any pointers for me?

This is what I think I should do:
    Get flyers made(by computer)
    Get business cards made(??maybe??)

Other than that I am clueless.. Any help would be GREAT!!

    Thanks

This can be a good industry, but seeing you just got out of High School I am going to give you advice you might not like.

Go to work for the largest Green Industry company you can find. Tell them you want to learn and one day want to go into business yourself. They didn't get that big by not knowing the business. The education you receive there would be worth its weight in gold. If they are a multi service company offering everything, so much the better. Short of going to college this is the best way for you to Become a successful businessman.

BTW As an Employer I would welcome a young energetic kid who was truly interested in learning. I might even take such a Kid under my wing and try to help them. Most employer will also, good attitudes are hard to find in today's employees.

Some people, and I didn't read the replys so I'm not talking about anyone who replied to this thread all ready, really like to make it sound more complicated than it has to be.

Look, I started my business 3 years ago. I got my first customer before I had a lawn mower. I put out 1,000 flyers and couldn't believe it when the phone rang. The call was for a scalp job. I rented a mower cost my $25.00 for the day. I had three calls and set them all up for the same day. The arrangement I had was for the customer to leave the check in the mailbox if they would not be home, none of them had a problem with it. That day I cashed $575.00 in checks. That was equal to two weeks worth of work at my previous job. I went to my local small engine repair shop and found two walk behind snapper 21" mowers for $50.00 ea. and a used still trimmer for $85.00. purchased them and three years later I still have one of the snappers on one of my trailers and I still have the trimmer also. I also have three full time employees two part time employees, a seperate flowerbed crew, and three complete rigs with about 125 lawns per week maintained. With some thinking outside the box and never listening to anyone who says "you can't do something" anyone can start with very little and reach the sky. You will get out of it whatever you put into it. My first 2 years I kid you not is was 6 12 to 16 hour days and 1 8 - 10 hour day. My winters were 6 8 hour days of door to door, hand shaking and selling. Now it has paid off, I'm earning more than I ever have in my life and it just seems to keep getting better everyday.

Good luck and look for any opportunity you can find to build your business. Never judge an advertising idea on whether it is good or bad, try it and let others decide if it is good or bad. I bet most of the people on here can give you a different story on how they got started, just because you don't do it the way someone else did doesn't at all mean your way won't work for you.

That was a lot more long winded than I meant it to be, sorry
