word of mouth can be your best bet. There'll be times when you'll get jobs that you bid high on and just because you where recommended you get it.
Signs on your truck and trailer, phone book, flyers, direct mailings, etc.. the usual.
also if you run a "search" for advertising you'll probably come up with a lot of threads to read up on.

I addition to what Scott mentioned: If you have a small local weekly paper, find out how much it would cost you to insert your flyer for one edition. Right now in my area (Houston) the growth of the grass is getting pretty slow. It will be dormant in about a month or so. Right now isn't the best time to advertise in this area, unless you are looking to get one time leaf cleanups as most of the leaves have not fallen yet (of course, getting these jobs could lead to regular mowing jobs come spring). In February, I will place an ad in the local weekly newspaper (business card sized ad). It costs $50 for one month. I plan to run it at least 2 months. We also have homeowners associations here that publish monthly newsletters. I plan to target 2 or 3 subdivisions that are close (including my own). These run $50 per month. I will also hire a couple of 13 year old boys from the neighborhood to distribute business cards (I prefer those to flyers).

        rkbrown,

Have you ever hired a 13yr old to pass out biz cards/flyers for you??? I don't think they would be very professional and might give you a bad look.. Make sure you don't send them out together, or they will play around and really couldn't care how bad they make you look..

        Just my thoughts

Don't forget to be sure you have a sign on the BACK of your truck. ie.People sitting behind you at a stop light can get a good look at it. I have gotten alot of business this way. I also do flyers. When you do a great job, people like to show off their property... word of mouth is in my opinion the best advertising you can get!

G-Man... I have seen it done on drop gates in my area...although not very often. I'll be doing that as soon as I get my trailer on the road. (see my post on the mechanical/trailers board... boat trailer to landscape trailer thread) The more times people see your name, the more they'll think to call you first.
