Has anyone here dealt with the Small Business Administration? I am trying to secure some financing to buy some commercial equipment and other startup necessities and thought that I might try to work with the SBA on stuff like business plans and securing a loan. The problem is that the nearest office is in New Orleans, which is about 45-60 minutes away, and I wanted to know if it would be worth my time to make the drive to talk with the people there. I don't know anyone here that has dealt with them, so any input would be helpful.

I have dealt with the organization. f you looking for their help for grants and such, move on, unless you are a minority, it's too time consuming. hey can show you what to do to secure a loan, but if your numbers just don't cut it, then it's up to you.
Now if you are wanting their advice and help for growing and operating a biz, they are gold. The good thing is that they are willing to help. See, they get paid by the government to help small biz. They can help you put together a business plan and such very easily. Of course, they know their stuff.a.k.a.---> Erich

Nah, they are smart people.
They know and can spot anyone trying to squeak through 'loop holes'.
Just be honest with them. Minority owned, or minority based companies get the most help. It's a horrible thing, but we surely can't change that. The 'majority' is quickly becoming the 'minority'. WOW, can't wait to see how much help the 20-40 year old white male will get in the next decade when they become the minority![
] I'm not putting anyone down, I just hate the fact that I didn't qualify easily to get business grants simply because I'm NOT a minority. Odd isn't it?
Also, if you have a large percent (like 75%) being minority US citizens, you can clean up on government loans too. Ain't dat just sweet! It's a schooooooooeeee in!a.k.a.---> Erich

Without delving into politics (heheheh!) I totally agree with Scaper - as usual. [

My advice is: Keep the government out of your business as much as possible. The Bass-turds will only make your life a living nightmare - believe me. I don't have any experience with SBA, but if they're ran like all of the other government agencies - then RUN, don't walk away from them!
As for minority ownership? Nobody you are going to mow for will give a rat's azz about it anyway - and you won't get the job simply because your owner is a crippled, blind, black woman!! The only people who look at such things are the government when they bid contracts. The rest of the business world (to some extent) couldn't care less about it, unless they are forced to "look at it" by the law.
This minority-ownership BS is just another part of the failed democratic program called "affirmative action". Only in America are successful businesses forced to pay to keep their incompetent competitors in business by the government! It's true in farming and all other businesses in this country.
Many educated minorities are starting to voice negative opinions about affirmative action. They don't like being identified with it -it's like getting a job because you're the nephew of the owner type of thing.
If your main motivation is to secure financing - then you're doomed anyway as Scaper just pointed out.
This government has gotten way out of control IMHO!
Merry Christmas!

Like I always say, Darwinism at it's worst. Protect your weak, protect your stupid, protect your criminals, protect your lazy. Make your best and brightest to work harder to protect the goofs. The harder they work, the less time they have for children. The lazy have all the time in the world for 22 kids a piece. Ahhhh yes, what a good idea for the gene pool!!
This has only been going on for about 1 generation, and look at how it is now...compared to then. Give it about 30 more years.....it will be horrible.a.k.a.---> Erich

I agree with everything posted above. Now it is harder for a white male to get a sba loan than a minority. I have talked to my local sba, they are more willing to help me with business plans, advertising ideas, ect. But when it comes to loans, forget it. You got to go to the bank yourself and get one.“veni, vidi, vici.â€
