  • Pinestraw mulch

I'm considering puting in a bid on a commercial property. It will be my fist commercial bid. The only hang-up I have about the bid is the pinestraw. Pinestraw is to be laid in the planter beds that are scattered throughout the property. It is to be applied once a year in the spring. In the past, with my residential customers, I just billed them for whatever pinestraw I used. But in this case I have to come up with a number as too how much it will cost. I have no earthly idea how much I'll use.

Does anyone know of a formula as to how many bails of pinestraw is needed for a planter bed x feet by x feet?

Someone probably does have a formula to determine this, but what I do is in the few cases where I have to bid pine needle installs is walk the beds and just kind of count based on where I think I'll be tossing a bail to be spread. If they want once a year then you'll have to go pretty thick. So if a bed is 6-8 feet wide then maybe count a bail every 5 paces or so. You'll kind of know just by walking it how many you'll need. Just be generous in your counts as its easier to put out more than to make too few stretch the whole property.

Had the same problem a few weeks ago. The client had an area of 2500 sq foot that needed pinestraw mulch. The bale from our supplier seemed to be alittle larger than average and it took us 26 bales to cover 2500 sq ft. My calculation from now on, for us, will be 1 bale = 96 sq ft. Then you just figure the exact square footage you need to cover and divide that by 96 sq foot to get the number of bales you'll need. Hope this helps.
