  • Advertising 1/2 off ...

It's the weekend couldn't get a hold of my tax guy.My question is for ex. if you were doing lawn care and offer 1/2 off one appl. if they buy 5 would you be able to write off the other half as advertising?

I think you can write it off one way or another, not that it matters if you write it off under advertising or under discounts/coupons. It is an expense that you incur to get business. Either way you didn't make income on that portion and incurred an expense.

You can you write off money you didn't make? It's not like you charged them full price and then wrote them a check for 1/2 of it, you never had the money come in to begin with so there is no income to balance with an expense.

I don't think it is possible. I could basically send out flyers to lawns that normally go at $35 with:

Your lawn - Normally $70, but sign up now and get 50% all year. Then bill them for $35 for the lawn that I would have normally charged at $35 anyway?

          I don't know, I wouldn't attempt it.

Might depend on your accounting method.

Accural? Maybe, but not as an advertising expense.

            Cash? Definetly no.

              Hi grandview,

I'd wait to talk to your accountant. We could tell you something you want to hear that could later get you into trouble and we don't want to get you into trouble.
