  • How much work to take on?

I need some help? I go to college three days a week. I can mow the other
5 days. This year I started with 16 clients. I have signed up many and have starting mowing but I may be over my head with work. I have 42 jobs and the calls keep coming. They are 1/4 to 1/2 acre lots mostly. I have been signing 3 to 4 a day and it keeps coming? What should I do? I am running a solo operation and am finishing school this spring. School ends may 12th. Please help me? I am mowing with just a 36encore. My ZTR is being serviced. I have nice trimmer and blower but am worried about keeping up . I am just not sure what should i do. Should I cut them off. I have at least three more on the answering machine. Please help me

If you go to school three days a week, then you have 4 days a week to service your clients. If you do 15 a day by yourself you can handle roughly 60 customers. Thats pushing it a little. I would hire some help and quit at 60. I'm also going to school full time and have a part time job. I manage to keep up 25 customers, and have 2-3 calls per day. I lose some bids b/c I can't always jump up and go, but you know. I've spent around 1k in ads this month and can hardly keep up with the calls. I'm about to quit my part time job in 2 weeks. Hope all works out. by the way, how are you advertising?

Hopefully not with bottom-of-the-barrel rates. I learned my first year out when all my bids were being accepted that it had as much to do with my unknowingly underbidding than it did my elite customer service skills. I celebrated the day a prospective client told me my rates were too high. If you have too much work, try raising your rates. That way, if you still land the job, you have a clearer idea of where your rates need to be. Plus, you'll be making your money at a more efficient rate. Just my two cents...
      WEAPONS OF GRASS DESTRUCTION

      Exmark Metro (36-inch)

well maybe my rates are low. But it seems they are much higher than many others I do not cut for under 30. How much do you charge for a 1/4 lot?
        .25 30-35
        .5 40-50
