Well I charge 55 dollars a yard taking it up or putting it down. I figure it is about the same type of work. You could also charge 40.00 dollars and hour for one person to take up the mulch but 55.00 to lay it. This is a couple of options.[:p]

Well I usually charge by the yard to spread the mulch. If there is a lot of extra work to do besides just laying down the mulch I might add a service charge. When I was first starting out I was buying my mulch retail, $32./yd for hemlock. On a normal job I would just double it to $64.00 and that would include cleaning out the bed of any debris, the new mulch, edging, and spreading the mulch. Now I buy my mulch from Maine where my local retailer gets it. I have to have it trucked in. I get 65 yds at a time and more if I have large jobs lined up. I pay almost half for the mulch this way but I charge the customer the same as I did when I was buying it retail. I do have a place to store the pile and a John Deere TLB 110 to load the mulch myself. Anyway, do you know how many yards of mulch you need to do the job? Hope this helps. Do you have a mulch spreading table to help you to figure it out? thanks for reading.

Approximately how many yards will this job take? It sounds like you are under pricing.a.k.a.---> Erich

I think you might be a bit low. Especially with removing the old mulch and dumping it. It's crazy that the guy thought you were too high! Without seeing the place, I would have been hovering around the $800 - $900 mark. Don't get discouraged, time yourself to do the whole job from start to finish and keep us posted as to the amount of time you ripped through that place.
You have to do alot of those jobs before you can really come up with a good average amount of time per yard, plus the additional work.
If the old mulch doesn't look too bad, and is not real thick, you might want to consider telling him it could be left for 2 years with no problems. And it can be, unless it is extremely thick. That would save you a couple hours. I hope you can get by without removing it.a.k.a.---> Erich
