  • Medical Insurance

I have been thinking about getting into the business for a couple of years now but one of the holdups has been the thought of medical insurance. I want to work on my own (no employees) but I have no idea what medical insurance for my family will cost. Anyone care to give me an idea of what to expect?

    Thanks.

There are many factors when it comes to insurance

Age, smoker, family size, location and coverages to give you a definitive answer. Your best bet is to go online and search for private insurance there are several sites out there that will give you a rough idea of the cost. Remember the less you want to pay for services the higher the premium.

When it comes to kids mine are very healthy and I really dont need a lot of coverage for them so a major medical policy will work for me. If I have to spend a 100.00 per year out of pocket thats way less then a policy would cost. As my husband and I are getting older its wiser to have more coverage for us. I am looking at about 300.00 per month for my husband and daughter.

I am covered at work but to add them to the policy is cost prohibitive.

Get a few quotes from insurance companies. You'd be surprised that some health insurance policies aren't as expensive as you'd think (though they might not be as good as what you get through your employer).

For my wife and I, we have a plan thru the Washington Farm Bureau, which costs us $631.58 per month. Its a Blue Cross Plan with the highest deductable at $2000/year per person. We pay a higher premium because of past injuries which may impact us later in life. Life time payout is $2 million per person, and because it comes thru an association, the premium is lower than it could be. Since we dont smoke, its a good price for WA.

Medical insurance is a MUST. I learned that the hard way. I saved $40,000 over a 10 year period of going without, but I'm still paying off a $40,000 orthopedic bill when I broke my left heel bones late in 2003. My wife had an $11000 out patient procedure last year.

health insurance can be extraordinary with the cost of healthcare being so great and ultimately the chance of you needing some kind of treatment just as great. Health insurance is an essential purchase. The toughest aspect would be which policy to choose.

Health insurance normally comes in two guises, group insurance and individual insurance. Group insurance is normally offered by your employer. The costs are covered by your employer but the cover isn’t usually as comprehensive as individual cover. Individual insurance is a private health insurance policy held by you and can be as basic or as comprehensive as you wish.

          Who needs health insurance?
Everyone needs health insurance. Unless you are independently wealthy, the cost of medical treatment and cost of ongoing medical care is so high that you can be bankrupted even if a small incident occurs. Insurance ensures that those exorbitant costs are covered by someone else.

What typically does a health insurance policy cover?
Policies vary massively in cost and total coverage. Hospitalization is normally included in even the most basic of insurance plans. This is good as hospitalization is perhaps one of the most costly factors in healthcare. Health insurance will cover you for a range of specialist treatments, regular out-patient treatment, surgery, x-rays and testing and maternity care. This should all be covered by even the most basic of policies. Comprehensive health insurance will give you generous allowances in all specialist areas, physio treatment, as well as alternative and complementary health treatments.

What typically does a health insurance policy not cover?
Health insurance can be as comprehensive as you like it to be. However, servicing long-term illness and disability is not part of a health insurance policy. Medication is also not covered by health insurance in many instances. There are some plans that cover this but generally it is an optional extra. In many instances, dental cover is not included as standard.

Additional insurance products that policy holders might need in this area
Disability insurance gives you an income stream beyond regular healthcare in the event of disability or long term illness. Health insurance only covers short-term and critical treatment so if you are concerned about the long term future in the event of illness, disability insurance should be high on your list of purchases.

Additional coverage for a health insurance policy
Basic plans are commonplace but only give you the minimal benefits. By extending increasing your premium, you also extend your coverage. You can even encompass your spouse and your dependents as part of your health insurance plan if you wish.

What will health insurance typically cost?
Health insurance plans differ massively between insurers. Shopping for the most competitive rate available will end up costing you more money in the long run as your cover may be very limited. You can spend a nominal amount and get a hospital indemnity policy which will only cover basic hospital care and for a limited time or you can get a comprehensive insurance that covers each conceivable circumstance. This can cost you many hundreds of dollars per year. If your health insurance is part of an employer group insurance policy then your employer bears the full cost of the plan.
