Say I have a great name and logo that I completely made up and has never been used before what does it take to make it mine and only mine. I'm sure money and forms will be in the mix?

I can only tell you the laws for Georgia, but I am sure things are probably similar in other states.
The first thing concerning the name of your business:
There is what is called the "Fictitious Name Act", If your business uses or will use any name other than your own, your must register under the Fictitious Name Act. Any proper name other than your own is a fictitious name. This however does not apply to corporations.
You would need to contact the Clerk of Superior Court for your county.
Concerning having a name just for yourself:
"Trademark and Service Mark"
Trademarks and Service Marks may be registered in the State if desired. The fee here is $15.00.
You would probably need to contact the:
New Jersey Secretary of State
Corporations Division
Office of Trademarks and Service Marks
You might want to look up the Small Business Administration or it may be listed as the Small Business Acceptance Corporation. They have a branch entitled "Small Business Development Center". They have a seminar for people in Small Businesses, and they have a booklet with all the addresses and phone numbers to agencys that you might need to contact. The seminar is only $25.00, and it is worthwhile as usually they have retired executives that participate, and some of them will be glad to give you advice on business situations in your area, they would be glad to help ask the right questions.

If you are talking about having your name and logo protected by a trademark or registered, here is a link to the U.S. Trademark and Patent office. This should give you some idea of what is all involved with protecting you name and logo.
