  • Commercial Bidding Question

Hello, My brother and I started our company and are trying to put in a bid for the public school in our area. There are 14 sites which total 165 acres. We think we have the numbers down to an atractive price while makeing a profit worth while for our selves. I wanted to ask you all how we should go about writing the bid. Should we explain exactly how our pricing is broken out? Should we explain exactly how we plan to reach each site in the aloted time? I need to know how to presebt this bid as well. Please help if you can.[]

I've never mowed or bidded for any public school system but I just went through the process of bidding on some highway mowing and I think they would be similiar. They should have a formant for you to follow. They'll want a list of your equipment, bond info, insurance info, minority hiring process info, and they have stipulations on when to mow, how high, no side discharge, your price per sq. yard for large equipment mowing, price per sq. yard for small equipment mowing, price per sq. yard for trash removal, etc...
I could be wrong and hopefully I am cause it was a headache. You should be able to get a copy of last years contract bids on request since it's public schools.

      Scott,
I've been curious in the past as to how much these guys are charging for right of way mowing. You said they charge by the square yard? What kind of dollar figure are they charging for a square yard of mowing with a bushhog?

We don't do it, but was curious as to how profitable this type of service is.

      thanks,
      Curtis

I'll have to look it up and I think I misspoke. They wanted me to quote how much to mow per acre. I really didn't see gobs of cash being payed out for amount of work that was being done. For highway mowing you'd probably need a 10-15ft batwing, and a couple smaller tractors with 5-6ft pull behinds.

I would think that a job this size would have a bid spec sheet and contract provisions on file at the town purchasing dept or engineering dept.[]

You are probably right Phil, but like I said I was just a little curious. Not enough to go all out in trying to find out information on the subject. We're not equiped for that type of work, and I don't see us heading there in the immediate future. But who knows where this busines will lead.

I would contact the school district and find out how they want the bid presented. Some places want it bidded a certain way and some don't. I would get a member of the board to either walk the properties or asign someone who knows to walk the properties with you and explain exactly what they want done. Then i would spell out in the contract the services to be done, and how often they will be done. I would also cover billing. Make sure no mater what you walk each and every property.
