i have a customer who did not pay thier bill, which was due aug 1st. i called, he said he DID pay, but would look to double check + make sure. i never heard back from him. i cut him off. he called and asked why i cut him off. i told him, no pay. he says he checked, he did in fact pay, he will send a copy of his statement. in the meantime, "can you please cut me?" well, i know that there is about a one in a million chance that i could have made a mistake. he did pay the sept 1st payment. it was the aug 1st payment we were unclear about. ok, so, i cut him. 2 weeks went by, i went to his house and demanded to see the cancelled check for the aug 1st payment. he got all shook up, "what, i HAVE TO PROVE IT? i told you i checked, and it was paid, isn't that good enough?" NO, IT ISN'T!!!!!!! would you have demanded to see proof of payment, if you were 99.9999999% sure he didn't pay, yet he insisted he did?

    Definitely YES.

Here is why. A gutter cleaning customer, who we did for the first time in Feb, called in May for a field mow/weedwhack since they had been in New Zealand for 2.5 months. I gave them the price of $165, sales tax included, and they signed off on the paperwork. I told them I would have 2 guys there on the following Monday morning for the nickel tour and I would send them the bill.

A month went by, so I called and asked when they planned to pay me. The wife says "we never got the bill" to "you never said you were leaving the property and you should have been here [to supervise]", (he saw me leave), to "my husband gave them the check". (he didn't know anything about a check!!).

The wife got really hot when I said that my employees didn't get a check; besides, that wasn't how I want my payments made. I send a billing, and they send me a check. I don't want my employees being the bill collector; its not part of their job description. I said, "please stop payment of the check you wrote, if you did write it, and send me another". She tried to insist that that stop payment would come out of my total owed, and I said NO IT WON'T.

I get my $165 check with a really nasty letter questioning the honesty of my employees, but she made my case. Her story kept changing when I confornted her dishonesty.

Absolutely. I have done it before myself. These days many banking institutions post copys of cleared checks online - front and back - very easy for customers to print a copy and get it to you via email, fax or in person without waiting for a monthly statement.

i'd landscape their yard for free, if you know what i mean . Just kidding. I cannot understand the nerve of these people. I really try to put myself in their position, and i'd gladly provide proof of payment before any more work is performed.

If he paid it then he would be more than happy to show you where the check cleared. I'd whip his ass.

There are better things to do than sit on the net and argue against Boobie's BullCrap. Such an idoit spouting his mouth a few dozen times a day wouldn't have the time to give his "business" the attention it needs to be a "success." Again, Boobie doesn't add up to much - statements from his dumb self conflicts with some other statement he said in another thread. Get offline and make some money.

I only dream of the day when I'm 41 and am STILL slaving away behind a lawn mower. What-a-life!

This would be why I scan all of my checks before I stamp them for deposit. I can easily go through my check images to see who's paid. There is almost no chance of error as I scan all the checks, and THEN stamp them and fill out my deposit ticket. The scanner saves them in a folder by the date, so all I need is a general idea of what date the check supposedly came, and check the folders. I usually only make 4 deposits a month anyway so it's easy enough to search the image folders for the timeframe.

What kind of scanner do you use. I am new at this and that sounds like a pretty good idea. Having them scanned and saved will dismiss a lot of headache. Also do you guys use accounting software? I have peach tree and quicken and am not sure of which one I should implement. Thank you.
