I'm aware there are a slew of of online directories. I'm listed as well....didn't even sign up. Hell I suspect I'm included in ALL those online directory sites just because they all got my company name off my yellow page advertising? Dumb thing is Yahoo is owned by AT&T, which also owns yellowpages.com....in which I paid for a listing on that site.
I pay something like $50/month for an online listing at yellowpages.com. Probably shouldn't have done so though, the rep pulled up search hits for "landscaper" on their site for my area this past year...yeah, only a hundred some. (population in the directories territory, bout 100k?)
Go to yellowpages.com, type in zip 66502 and search under "landscaping contractor." I'm the fourth result (business name will be red)....that's what $50/month gets ya. We'll see how it pays off over the course of the year? Already received a call from a builder in KC which is the general contractor for a major building project in Ft. Riley. Wanted to know if I'd be interested in submitting a bid for the landscaping. (Had to decline at this time....didn't want to get in a bidding war with the major landscaping co.s in my area)
I believe people are reluctant to switch from using traditional yellow pages over to online versions....but many already have. Keep in mind the older crowd likey doesn't even use a computer. Yellow page companies are terrified some day the traditional printed directories will be minimally used....why do you think they've ALL invested in online directory sites? The tide will change - someday?
I know I'm swaying from the topic at hand, but these are things to consider when developing an advertising strategy.

Google Local, Yahoo! Local, and MSN Local are all excellent places to list your company and as vaughnslawns said, they're all free.
While many people still use traditional telephone directories, a significant number of people now use only the internet. And, they don't even both to go to the yellowpages.com or other telephone directory sites because they know they can find a lot of the information by doing a search via Google or Yahoo!.
Getting your company listed is VERY easy to do and can be taken care of in about 15 minutes. With the way the internet is becoming a part of people's lives, it's definitely something to consider if you're looking to increase your exposure and customer base.

You guys won't beleive what this add had done in about one month. I read this thread in late december and signed up for the google and yahoo local ads. I have gotten three calls: one for residential snow removal, one for plowing a nice commercial lot that I subcontracted to a buddy of mine which I will be doing next year and the last call will be the most profitable it s also for plowing and salting and I also subcontracted this one and making money doing nothing but this place was just built and has over 10,000 sq. ft. of land that needs to be seeded then fully maintained in the summer and the plan also calls for some plant installation and mulching.
