Just was wondering when people start mailing and hanging flyer's for next season. I live in Ohio and have been mowing part time for 4 years and I am adding pesticide service this next year. Any help would be appreciated.

I advertise all year long which is part of my marketing plan. If you want people to call you in the spring and not the competition, start advertising NOW. It costs money to keep ads in that produce few customers at this time of year, but the delayed rewards are worth the expense incurred now.

Advertising isn't something that should be reserved for a few months out of the year!!

            We don't do fliers.

Our advertising is 3 phone books which are a given for the year around advertising, so that's not what I'm addressing.

But definitely newspaper advertising in whatever form that takes: classified ads or display ads. I"ve done display ads in the local weekly for the past 5 years and a display ad in the local monthly business journal for about a year. This year I made the leap and put color in both display ads. We haven't done daily papers.

At this time of year running color display ads is a leap of faith, but it is also a big marketing boast over my competition. The leap of faith is paying for them thru the winter months when cash flow is less. But there is a big competive advantage, our name is out there every week/month and we do pick up enough winter work to pay for that cost. The pay off will be this spring when the calls start picking up when we are already swamped and looking for the "fat plums".

If you do fliers, i have no words of wisdom for you since I have never gone that route.

i run a block add in the verizon yellow pages which also gives you an internet add. just recently i started an add for 6 months in a hoa newsletter. i also do postcards in the flyer boxes ( around here all the mail boxes have the small wooden boxes for flyers and such, the newspaper gets thrown on the ground or driveway. ) i will start heavy in jan. , feb., and march for mowing , mulching, etc. after that when i have time. i hit hard again in august for areations, seeding and fert. since i am solo i can go heavy or light depending on how much work i get. what i mean by this is like this past aug., i was gonna put out 3000 postcards but only got about 400 out and had more work than i could handle for sept ,oct. and nov.

For lawn fertilization services you should mail out now. Most of your larger companies lock up people for the year in Jan by offering a 2% to 5% discount if they pay in full in advance. Check out www.affordablepromoting.com for some good landscape industry post cards. They have customized stuff for me for free in the past.
                Good luck!
