i offer a 20 dollar off cupon on all of my fliers and postcards with a contract. Some people dont even use it but ive found that it makes people hold on to fliers and postcards. They just dont go right into the trash.

We give a "free cut" but I show them the price for the total contract and then I take out one cut changing the whole contract price. I always make sure they understand the way I did it. That way we will not be working for free all at one time.

Give them something with perceived value, meaning it is of value to them, but isn't necessarily costing you much at all - in fact, you ought to generate additional renevue with the offer as opposed to paying the customer to work for them!

          Like what?

Oh say a discount for a fertilizing, aeration, annual planting, or gutter cleaning - or just saying if you sign a yearly maintenance contract we'll clean your gutters for free.

Giving a free mowing is like saying, "all we do is mow." Meanwhile, offering other services says, "we have other services as well." Down the road, they'll likely contact you to perform whatever service you intially offered for the free or reduced cost - better yet, after performing the service ask if they'd like to include such a service into their contract to be performed on a regular basis.

Upselling to your current clients is the cheapest marketing known to man.

Upselling happens all around you. When you go to a restuarant, they normally ask if you'd like to order an appetizer before your meal, then they'll ask if you'd like a desert afterwards. Fastfood quickly grew fond of the Supersize craze....and for good reason - how much does a tad bit of more fries and soda really cost? NEARLY NOTHING, yet you're paying 50-70 cents more! I laugh at Wendy's scam - notice how they've changed their sizing? Now the medium is their old large size. So to the morons in line whom aren't paying attention and just say they want it Medium size end up with the large size. DOH!

Ever notice how tire shops normally have chassis & tire inspection specials ALL THE DAMN TIME? DOH, those cheap services lead to HUGE upsells, esp to the female customers!

I did this my second year out, and my god it was a pain in the butt. Customers swore I was cheating them b/c they couldn't keep track of the 5th cut. My bill showed plainly which cuts were charged for and which ones were free. They got mad b/c there lawns didn't need it every week, however I pointed out in the contract we would mow every week regardless. I actually lost a couple customers over it saying it was a "scam".

It did get me a fairly high contact rate for my advertising dollar, but in hindsight, I would NEVER do it again.
