Issueing of PPE

How many times will you issue PPE?

Gloves:
Once?
Replace it when it's worn out?
When your goofy employees drops their glove in a puddle and then don't want to use a wet glove, or one that has been dried out after it was dropped in a puddle?

Eye protection:
Once?
Replace it when they're scratched up pretty good?
or how about 20mins after you give it to them and they sit on them, or leave it on the bummer?

I just replace them as needed. They are cheap to buy. Obviously if one guy keeps needing more and more, something is wrong and that will be dealt with. I will allow my guys to use their own glasses, but I have to see them first and make sure they are good enough to offer decent protection.


P.S. - I recall you making fun of my spelling last month. I'm curious if your title is correct. And I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what a 'bummer' is.

I have worked for companies that provided the equipment. Eyes, gloves, and hearing.

The glove bit, dry it out and use it.

I paper clipped a memo on all the time cards once that depending on how many pairs of glasses were on my desk at 8am monday morning was going to determine my mood the following week and how much we worked. 8 pairs by 7 am monday morning were turned in ,,, about 2 dozen less than i had shelled out over the previous 10 months. Tried keeping them in my desk but they just take them because I am never there. Tried to be a hard ass and stop issuing but quickly realized the consequences if there is an eye injury and i a refused to issue proper eyeware,,,,,, so the best thing to do I have found is act an ass everytime they request them. I have never had anybody bring a damaged or worn out pair for exchange. Its always to replace lost pairs. Ive considered big bulky ugly glasses but have never sat down to find them. I figure if i issue crap they will buy theyre own? But more than likely they just wont wear any at all.

I dont provide gloves at all. used to provide jersey gloves but you just end up with dash boards full of wadded hard nasty gloves, usually all left handed. Now that i dont buy those gloves are hard to come by around here. Go figure?

Your all too soft. This is my experience with safety gear; not from the giving end but the receiving. You get one set issued-maybe. To me, in this business that would include safety glasses and ear plugs. Gloves are the individuals responsibility. You cant allow someone to lose their hearing or eyesight, but a few blisters never hurt anyone for long. If your the applicator, I figure the first pair of glasses, chem resistant gloves and apron, overshoes and a respirator could be provided - once. After that...no gear, no worky, no check. Send them home if they don't have them and balk at paying for another set. Keep stuff in stock but use the old debit memo for replacement. They will soon learn to keep tabs on them. That's how I learned to anyway. Actually I had learned enough about keeping track of my things prior to joining the work force and so it should be with others. You are not their babysitter. Now all of this is easier for them to swallow when you give out a few shirts each season or a jacket or such in the fall, maybe a knit cap for the winter. Just my opinion which is probably not worth much in this scenario, being an owner operator and not an employer of others.

I'll bet Grassmaster don't buy tools for his mechanics, should they lose them.

At my other full time they pay for steel toe boots, jeans, and collared shirts. All of our pick. $150 for boots, same for jeans, and $100 for shirts. Every year...

As far as eye and ear...there is a box at each entrance to the plant of foam ear plugs. Eye protection, there are cases of them in the tool cage and at each piece of equipment also have face shields around. SCBA 2 at the entrance of each plant.

My old place of employment they gave you a voucher for boots yearly, glasses yearly, if you lost them then you bought a new pair. ear plugs were free. I was looking after this discussion started and found them on Granger for 1.50/pair.
