  • It's like South Africa hot!!!

Yesterday I had a guy start throwing up from too much heat. I took care of him and shut down early. Today another guy was close, real close to throwing up. So I shut down at 11am but I'm starting up again @ 4pm and will probably work till 8pm.

I have tons of water on site and insist that everybody drink at least a bottle an hour. For the past two weeks, we've worked 30mins, stopped for 15 between 9-2. I also have limited gatorade that I ask the guys to cut w/water or else they'll really be sick.

Anybody else having these kinda problems? What kind of solutions are you coming up with?

When you hot your hot, when your not your not!

      Are they working too hard?
Are they wearing something on their head?
Are they wearing long pants & shirt with short sleeves?

You really need to pace yourself in the heat & dress properly. Bare meat in the Sun & Heat cooks at a slow rate.

You don't think you would be better off working them until 1PM or 2PM, skipping lunch until they're off? Then knock off. There's no way in this world I would work until 11AM, then come back at 4PM, that's the hottest part of the day. It's one thing to start in the morning when it's cool & work as it gets hotter, but to hit the ground running at 4 in the afternoon, no way?

I would think if I was good & cooled off & then have to go back to work at 4PM, I would find me another job. Like inside at a tanning booth or Victoria Secrets!

Are they getting sick a little after they eat? What are they eating?

When I worked in curing at Firestone & a new guy started to work there, we would go over what to eat & what not to eat and so forth...

Then a few days later he would get Spaghetti or Chicken and Dumplings. We would bet how long before he barfs or pases out. You had to baby sit them to because of so many moving parts on the machinery & the dreaded flying fork lift truck.

Curing was 120 year round, nothing but steam & burns. I wore leather on my upper body because I didn't like those nasty burns & scars.

You had to be under 45 to work in curing.

We never knocked off due to heat & took very few breaks but I was the oldest, LOL 35 when I almost died of a heat stroke, the other guys were in their late teens or early 20's. Remember we very seldom get a breeze & if we did we would get chills. I would pull my Stetson off & shake from the chills when it was hot & the wind would blow. Yes we had many days over a 100 not the heat index 100 either?

Be careful because once you have a real heat stroke your about useless if it's over 90 degrees outside. It's putting a bad hurting on me now & about all I do is look at crap & talk crap! Sometimes I point at crap too, if I feel up to it & hopefully I'm pointing down because pointing up is just too much for me!

The 4pm idea was one of the guys plan for today. I nixed that idea and we're starting at 4am and knocking off at noon. I'm all for that.
The reason for suggesting 4pm was that it usually rains around that time, therefore cooling things off a bit, plus the pay period ends on Wednesday and they wanted to make sure they got their 40.

what do we wear, most of the guys wear long athletic shorts and tees w/ballcap. Installing irrigation in pants can really suck.

lunch; lunch doesn't normally happen this time of the year. It's too freakin hot to eat.

man,, is my niece just cute or what?

Not to be an azz, but what are you doing at those hours? Surely not cutting or making other noise that early.

I don't know what he was doing but I was eating breakfast at a coffee shop until 4:45, got to jobsite @ 5am and finished up two new construction irrigation jobs.
