  • End of Mowing Season, How to get my money Owed

I bill monthly and have about 3 of 50 customers who have decided to shaft me and not pay. One owes $280, another $160, and the other one $80. I have exhausted all efforts for getting my $, and have decided that I will have to take these customers to small claims to get my money. They are all under contract. Has anyone ever done this, and will I win the cases? How much money will it cost me to take these people to court. p.s. I have never registered my biz with the state or anything like that...is that required to take these people to court?

well first of all you can go to a collection agency. they will take a portion of the money. you will probably end up seeing about half of the money. this happens so get use to it. and for the record, I hope you don't get a dime and these people stiff you. you are running an illegal business and for that I hope you get burned

don't open a can of worms you can't handle.....customer checks you out and reports you, next comes the IRS ratting. send them certified, return receipt mail with a late charge attached.....that always works for me and then i cut them loose. pushing the court issue will just pizz them off and then you better be on the up and up.............

depending on what this guy offers in his services someone could really cause trouble for him. as far as this state stuff goes, you know here we go through our local county or city for our business license but that is just the beginning. depending on his company size he might have to have a contractor license, or maybe be signed up with worker comp, unemployment, and if he does chemicals he would have to be listed with his state office of pesticide services assuming that his state is run like ours. oh, and if by chance someone knows his insurance company they could check on his commercial status which he probably doesn't have either.

No city license (tax) required here yet but I see it comming. I would like to see it, and have it enforced. Scabs without ins and not paying txs can cut grass much cheaper than I can.

Why would someone need a license to cut grass ***... This is not brain science...I mow lawns for a living. I don't spray, don't believe in it personally...I think it's harmful to our environment. No license is required for mowing anywhere I know, not here in OK. Everything is legal. Insurance is a personal choice for mowing a lawn like carrying health insurance, not the law by any means. The only thing I have to worry about is registering my biz name w/ state or someone might try to steal my biz name but other than that no worries, and I only have 75 weekly lawns so I'm not worried about someone taking my name.

insurance is only a safety issue. here you simply need a $20.00 a year business license if your opperating under a NAME
