Thanks for all the information from this forum. It has helped immensely in my decision making thus far in starting a business. I am to the point, where i have all my ducks in a row as far as ideas and marketing etc, but I dont know in what order I need to get my permits, insurance business name etc.....I know what I have to do, I just dont know in what order they need to be done. Say for instance, do I need a business name before insurance, do i need insurance before I get permits, when and where can the SBA come into effect etc.......I am in NY. Do you have any idea of the start up money for filing of all the necessary paperwork? Any other advice on the entire process is great. Thank you all.

first, it's best if you have a business attorney to go over what is needed for proper filing within your state, especially NY and all that you need to do there to run a business. Figuring out you business name, and have a few back up names so when you have your attorney register the name he won't have to call you back to say, "the name you want is already in use and can't be used", it happens. Find a few business insurance agents and inquire with them the amount for premiums. They will want to know what you actually will be doing in your business so they can establish the amounts you need in liability and property damage, which are typically set by the state and most agents can find that out in minutes for you. It is a great idea to attend an SBA meeting, usually they will hold them from time to time and the will have someone (retired business owner usually) help you in the start up and setting up the necessaries for you to get a start. Good Luck!

Save your money on the attorney for now. All you need is a small amount of money ($20) or so. Register your business name with your town. You can do it yourself. It's quick and easy. On the permits, you have to define your services before knowing what you'll need. For example if you are going to apply fertilizer/pesticides you'll need to register your business and get a pesticide license with the DEC. The best way to do this is to join a local association which will help you study a course and get you scheduled for a test with the DEC (Dept of Environmental Conservation). On Long Island if that is where you are, a good association to belong to is - Nassau Suffolk Landscape Gardeners Association/New York State Landscape Grounds Association (NSLGA)
P.O. Box 489
Brightwaters, NY 11718, URL=http://]NSLGA@aol.com[/URL]
These associations are your advocate and they represent you at the legislature level. Not to mention you won't be going on your own, seek them for advice. For insurance a lot of landscapers on long island use Farm Family Insurance they specialize in agricultural stuff. www.farmfamily.com.
Also register with your local Consumer Affairs Department. Hope this is informative.maddog22

Not sure how well that answered your question. You will need a name for your insurance. So that comes first, unless your gonna use your own name not the company name on the policy. Having insurance is definitely one of the first things you should look into.maddog22
