    I am starting a lawncare biz this spring and was under the assumption that I did not need to charge tax for lawn mowing or other services. any info???

    Yes, you do. In NY, on lawn services, you are required to charge sales tax on all services. You will need to apply for a tax # thru NY. They will send you paperwork every three months, you must fill out, and send with any applicable tax back to them. Even if you do not receive any sales tax for a given period, you must still make out the forms and mail them in.

        I am located near binghamton ny in apalachin. Thanx for the info. I knew this state would be on the service tax bandwagon.

          This may be a dumb question, I know, but is Taxachussetts ( MA ) the same deal. Sales tax. I spoke with a guy at the Dept. of Revenue here who said as long as I was not stocking and reselling goods, I could just use my soc. security # being a sole proprietor. File quarterly of course. The whole tax thing is the one area of business that seems to turn my brain to oatmeal.

          What do you all think. I plan to work solo, at least for a couple of seasons. Thanks for any advice.

            Yeah, you can use your ss# if you are a sole proprietor. I think, correct me if I am wrong here guys, you would need a tax # if you have a corporation or have employees.
