I have a small new tree service but also do mostly landscaping. I do all of the climbing myself but have hired a kid (19 yr. old) who can also climb trees. He is a hard worker and we mostly work alone and sometimes with a third person. When he started about 2 months ago I told him that I would pay him $8/hr and mentioned bonuses for climbing and anything noteworthy such as finding extra work etc., I thought that this was a good set-up and would keep him motivated. I think that he Is a good worker and has leadership potential and is smart as well as experienced. I am frustrated because my bonus plan seems to have backfired and instead of making him motivated it has caused him to feel that hard work and small climbing tasks are not part of his job description. He also seems to act as if he is being cheated on payday which has avraged to about $10/hr Under the table. He complaines a lot the past few days after having only a $265 pay after only a 30hr. week. He even asks what his bonus might be IF he does such and such task. I dont like the attitude but feel that it is mostly my fault for creating the pay situation. Am I not being fair and how can I address the issues with him? Also, how would you guys pay a landscape helper / limited experience tree climber?
