In the state of washington you are required to at least have a specialty contractor license if you are doing anything but mowing a lawn. They say if you are removing or installing anything it requires the license. If you are only going to mow lawns then you still need to be licensed with the state with a doing business as name (d.b.a.) and a U.B.I. number.

Also you need to be insured and bonded. Here, you need to have a $6000 bond for a specialty and a $12000 bond for a general. The license is good for 2 years but, the insurance needs to be paid annually (unless paying monthly) and the bond needs to be paid annually. For me to become legal and to do things right it cost me around $1400. It was well worth it. Best investment I have ever made.

        Virginia Contractors License

Take a look at this link. Click on forms, then contractors license. In VA you're supposed to have at least a class C contractors license if you're bidding work valued over $1000.

I was a carpenter in VA. Why do you need a contractors license? The only reason I had a class C is so I could pull permits. You don't need a permit to mow grass. Do you? I figured it works the way it does here in KY, where to mow grass all you need is a business license with tax id and proof of insurance. Although I do have a KY contractors license also but it is only so I can be a licensed contractor that can pull permits because I do remodeling also. Enlighten me if I don't understand completely.

If all you do is cut grass, you don't need a contractors license. But you do need a business license, etc.

Contractors license is needed on anything you install.

That is a simple generalization. Check with your state Dept of Licensing or Dept of Revenue for the details.
