  • new business name

    Hi everyone,

I recently had my association approve my new lanscape company and am ready to submit my license to the city for approval.

I've narrowed my name down to two and would like opinions.

    Emerald Acres

    or

    Emerald Greens landscaping

Second one. The first one sounds like a place, not a business.

Lets take a step back and determine who the association is that approved your choices?

Pick a name that does not limit the "depth" ... of various services you might offer. One of the best names "out there" to accomplish that aim is ... Service Master.

Think of a name that comes under an "umbrella" ... so that as you add new services these can be identified as "divisions" ... lawn care division ... landscape division ... irrigation division ... construction division ... etc etc

I'd go with the second one also. Emerald Acres sounds like a place with headstones.

Isn't emerald a brightly colored or rich green? So is this a golf course? Emerald GREENS? or a cemetary Emerald Acres.

New business? or new business name? Why not just use YOUR name? This isn't some huge corporate company is it? Don't worry about the "depth" of your company, there are many LCO's who use their last name and are still in business. But state what you do and don't make people wonder. There is a guy here who ( I will omit his name cause I don't think it is very professional bad mouthing another LCO) who's name is __________ enterprises. Then he has a sign saying mowing, odd jobs and some other kind of work. You aren't even sure what this guy does. Tom's Landscaping, Joe's Lawn Maintenance or Davis Irrigation Co. tells you exactly what they do. Focus on the product or services you are selling them and make them better than anyone elses. Let your good work and reputation make your company name. I hate it when people try and be something they aren't, be honest in a company name. If you can't take pride in your work and put your name to it, then why even be in business. Do whatever you do and do your very best at it. MY OPINION: Who cares about some association. Not everyone here is a bigshot. Some people have small companies, are successful as business owners and are profitable. It's ok to not have 5 crews working for you in the first, second or 5th year in business. Keep track of the small things and be wise about the big things.

No, you misunderstood my post. My association had to approve a home office in my townhome complex before I could apply for my business license.

Zoning dept. at City Hall. You have to go through the same process here. It doesn't mean squat, just another $75 you have to give to the man.

Contact your associations board of directors and find out who your property manager is. Write out a letter stating your intent and how your business will be run out of your home. Once you send the letter out, the board will make it a business item their next meeting, just make sure you go....
