If she works for a lawyer get his/her advice. I know the people on this forum know their stuff. But we are not lawyers. I think I saw that you were 16. I would take your time before you make your self pay taxes.

Your DBA is registered with the Secretary of State if you incorporate or do a LLC; otherwise it's done by the local or state licensing dept. For any legal advice, find a good "business lawyer"; the rest of us lawyer wannabes can't give you legal advice.

        Lawyer joke of the day:

A boat was loaded with lawyers who were doing some deep sea fishing. Somebody yelled: SHARKS!! Everybody ran to the right side to look and the boat capsized, throwing all the lawyers right into the midst of the school of Sharks. The Sharks refused to eat the lawyers out of professional courtesy.

Agreed, only go to secretary of state if you are a inc. or LLC company in Arkansas as I explained, this is coming from a 100k lawn professional!

Not exactly. You need to decide what is the best tax structure for yourself. There are advantages and disadvantages to each tax structure, i.e., sole proprieter; partnership and its various forms; S corp; or LLC. It can get confusing.

Most of the guys register as a sole proprieter. If you have assets to protect, business or personal, you want something that also gives you the best tax advantage besides protection of assets.

The best way is to educate yourself on each and then make an informed decision on what's best for your situation.

Completly agree with Stephen M. If you are just starting and only have a few customers I would not reccomend incorporating or LLC until you pick it up next spring but it's your business.

Look, every state is different, so just go to the county clerk's office and ask them. They're the ones that should know.
