  • just hired a new guy...

after firing six in one month....He absolutely rocks. I know I cant afford him full time but Im going to keep him on at least four days a week ..he deserves more than I pay him and I intend to raise his pay within the year...Im sacrificing a decent chunk of change for this guy it seems worth it being that he frees me up a lot to manage and sell..my question is:does this seem to be sound good business practice? also how many of you have been in this position? thanks as always for any help.

It sounds like you are investing in a piece of equipment to make you more efficent and better qualified to compete in your industry. Sounds like a good investment to me. Of course you'll be making payments, so you need to generate more income.

earlyer this year ( june )i had to make a desision to bring on my 1 part time guy on full time or he was going to quite. he was working a full time second shift job plus about 30 hours a week with me. he was the best employee i ever had. he could'nt handle the hours any more. so I took the plung and brought him in full time ( thanks to the advise of seascape and other members). i told him at the time i could't garentee him 40 but i would try like hell to keep him busy. As of last week he has averaged 55 hours a week, i have anouther part timer at 20 hours a week and just hired another that is working 20-30 hours a week. In all of this hireing, I am still in the feild working 60-70 hours a week and my wife works with me in the feild 30 hours a week.

the point to all of this is the work will come, hire him and do all you can to keep him. you will be in over your head befor you know it. If you want some advice, add some service, you have anouther mouth to feed. we added painting and fencing this year, It has made a big differance in the slower parts of the season.

      hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could also pay him a few hours a week to go out and distribute flyers, post signs, hang doorhangers or other marketing. Give him a little maintenance to do on mowers and other equipment (oil changes , blade sharpening and the like). That'll save you some more time to do some of the behind the scenes work. If you apply fertilizer/pesticides, and he is not yet lisenced, pay him an hour or two to study for the exam. All of those things will generate more money for you in the long term even though he won't be working at a jobsite.
