When I boot the disks will I have to go back and install all my software? I'm thinking so...

Ummm..... What software are you talking about?

If you are talking about software that runs on Windoze, forget about it. While you can use Wine or even VMWare, as a general rule, the software you now use under Windoze will NOT run under unix/linux.

What are the programs that you use/need on it? Most likely, there are already going to be linux equivilant versions already installed.

There is a huge difference in the function of your machine after installing linux. You won't be running any *.exe files anymore. You won't be running any software written for Windoze anymore. But do not panic. It is like going from the Special Olympics (Windoze) straight to professional baseball or football (linux).

Hmm.... You know what... Before you take the plunge...

See, I can already tell what you are going to do. Install Linux, try using it for all of 20 minutes, say "F this man, I can't even get my software to install", format the drive, reinstall Windoze, then badmouth Linux till the end of time because it was too much for you.

Here... I have a BETTER idea. Get Knoppix Here

Ok, go to that link. Click on the US/Brit flag for ENGLISH. Download the cd (just one single cd). I wouldn't bother with torrents. Just grab it from a fast mirror.

Ok, now burn that iso to a cd. Label it so you don't lose it. Put it into the cd drive. Turn on the computer. Like magic, Knoppix boots.

FEAR NOT! Knoppix runs ENTIRELY from the cd! It DOES NOT write ANYTHING to your hard drive! Now, since it is coming from a compressed cd, it WILL be a lot slower to run. A lot of memory helps here. But, all or nearly all applications are available, you can actually use it, you can learn about it, and when you get that paranoia that Billy Gates might not be happy with you, you can turn the machine off, remove the cd, and reboot under Windoze like a proper little puppet.

Yes Linux is better but it's not for ever one?

I'm a slave for Bill Gates and his M$ Corporation, but I have not had problems running Windoze I have a original WinXP install that's been running since Oct. 2003 and I ran a Win98 application from 1999 to June of 2005 with very few problems.

Any problem that I do have Google can solve it for me or as a last resort I have a Ghost Images to go back too. The 6 years of Win98 all I used was registry restore from previous days. I used Ghost to bail me out 1 time on WinXP & I knew it was coming.

Yes Windows is not for everyone, but computers are not for every one either?

You can take a shot GM, I'm certain I'd pull on you given the chance and proper cover...but you guys shouldn't act like punks for asking a question about something YOU brag on...maybe put your money where your mouth is?

I'm just wondering about things like virus subscriptions...the only software I use is ZoomBrowser EX, Bit Tornado, Spybot, and Sonic for burning.

So, when it boots I'll have a clean formatted disk? or will I see images of what was on the disk?

Here's the only chance & proper cover, you're going to get...

Is there a particular WIFI network you're trying to get into?

Last I read over 50% of the WIFI networks are not even password protected, the majority of them that are have not even changed from the default settings of...

            user name: admin
            Pass word: admin

did you try to go to their local admin page it might be this one http://192.168.1.1/ if you can at least get on that particular network & get to this page most of the battle is over?

I haven't tried to get in that many networks, I've never bragged about what I know about Linux but I think you didn't read that top link I posted in the other reply above this one.

The only use I have for others networks is riding on their WIFI while I'm at that particular location. I haven't had a problem yet.

The only way I would tackle Linux is if I had an extra computer or I would set up a separate partition for Linux so I could switch back & forth. Linux will be a hard learning curve at the start even for a Punk like me!

To be honest with you, if you're LapTop is running good right now, the only way I would consider using Linux is make a seperate Partition & make it where you can have a dual boot system.

PS: If you know whom I'm talking about here... Larry Flint should be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction with your wep problem.

Burn the Knoppix cd. It's real nice to be able to boot into a secure system. Besides, you can boot into it, use it, learn, and always just pull the cd and reboot into Windoze.

yea, I'm going to....airsnort DOESN'T work with SP2, oh-well....I'm gonna get to learn something new!
seems NO wep crackgrams work w/ sp2......I wonder why? BG doesn't like insurgents grabbing free net? Cox cable has barcodes on their WIFI routers and that's the password. I know and have used all the old tricks, for sometime now- but it seems like new counter measures are being deployed, and as we know- a good insurgent needs to change tatics- so I guess that will be leading to linux.

I have a dead laptop, that needs a HDD, so I think I may just buy the new HDD and boot that laptop fresh w/ new HDD. Then I don't have to worry about tweaking out my new laptop- and the old one will be my mobile intruder and rogue downloader....I can't wait!

I use Knode. It's OK, unless you are grabbing stuff from the larger binaries groups (like warez, mp3's, etc). Then it slows down a bit from the huge index size. All usenet readers do to some degree, some more than others. But, I have been pretty happy with Knode.

Now my brother keeps telling me to get Libido (LInux BInary DOwnloader). Of course Klibido is built for KDE. You can grab it from sourceforge, I'll put the link here. I'll have to check Packman's repository to see if it is available already compiled for Suse 10 x86-64. If not, I'll compile it, no real big deal. I'll install it later today and let you know what I think of it.

                    Get Klibido Here

Please do explain how the wiping of the partition tables on your hard drive, installing new partitions, new filesystems, and formatting them, is somehow "different" on a Xeon? It isn't. You just don't know what the f__k you are talking about. Your processor has nothing to do with your partiton tables being rewritten. He was asking if, after installing Linux, he would have to reinstall his software. That software that he speaks of is written for WINDOWS, not Linux! It not only CAN NOT be run natively under Linux, but since the partitions were deleted, and the frigging filesystems are different, that software is lost for good.

If you think your magical xeon processors can somehow circumvent that, I (and the rest of the world) would like an explaination as to how.

Stick to stuff that you have at least SOME knowledge of, like lawn maintenance equipment. In the computer world, you are out of your realm. You quite honestly don't have a clue as to what you are attempting to talk about.

Continue to hijack these educational threads, and I'll have your posts deleted. Take your stupidity elsewhere.
