So I have this new website in the works, mmsmm.info.

Ok, so I created the domain and began to use the one month of free hosting from godaddy. The hosting sucked, so I got rid of it. So now you just see a generic "parked" page from godaddy.

Well, this shouldn't be that way. I found some cheap azz hosting through some other company, $12 for 12 months. Just very basic. I designed the site through MS Publisher, which means I have to upload it to the server using ftp: junk.

Yeah, so I tried that for the new server. Each time I upload it, it looks like the upload was successful, but yet when you go to http://mmsmm.info you still get the page from godaddy.

What gives? I'm no good with this internet site stuff.

Is it Linux or Windows web server hosting?

Did you name a home page? It must be...

Linux? (spell?) is www.mmsmm.info/index.html or .htm or something?
Windows is www.mmsmm.info/Default.htm or html or something?

    OR...

Oh, did you do your DNS thingy... Did you point your domain to the Domain Name Servers your web hosting provider told you too?

You must first be able to find the home page, if that's the problem. If I knew more I could help you. There's nothing wrong in not being educated in .html or a hotmeal?...

I have an Aunt that has numerous degrees in Law, the State of Georgia & International Law, she never was human compatible in being a lawyer ever she was to frigging smart too & it took all she could to hold down a job as a Librarian for about 55 years? She's 79 years old & she's afraid nobody will come to her funeral. Her net worth is not even $20K & that's pushing it...

And she don't know .html or a hotmeal either? But she's got plenty of paper to wipe herself with.

PM me for the more intelligent & important info...

Hey what does that make you feel like? I've felt it before numerous times & so has 100's of members here too?

PS: If you want to build web pages, take a short cut to success & get MS Front Page, it's configured like a word processor & it's cheap on e-bay & other places. I can do stuff with MSFP & AOL that is unheard of. Bill Gates or Mike Dell doesn't know crap about .html or a hotmeal?... And do you think them, GrassMaster or Roscoe cares? Nope, Not an Onion?

    Ask Erich H. about MSFP?

Front Page is the way to go. I went out and bought it after GrassMaster made the recommendation. I also bought 2 of those starter help books, but they weren't too much help.

At first I had a hard time with it. Fact is, I was just overwelmed at what it could do and I got info overload and almost gave up. But after GrassMaster said one thing to me, it all fell into place: "Just pretend it's a good word processor program."

After that, I looked at the program differently and it just came together. I designed it pretty quickly from that point on.

I also used the server and whatever else I needed from GrassMasters advice.

And if that wasn't enough???? When I was ready to upload, I was having trouble. GrassMaster to the rescue yet again! Back and forth, back and forth, and it turned out to be the problem of some person that didn't hit the correct button somewhere else. GrassMaster basically figured that one out. A quick call to the company, and the guy on the other end said "Ooops, I'll hit the switch (or somehting like that)..." And I was good to go.

I will likely be changing my website this winter and will buy the newest edition of Frontpage as well.

I will say this and mean it 110%. If it wasn't for Grassmasters advice, I wouldn't have started it, and no way could I have finished it. Now he has given me more advice to help with search engines, but as of yet, I have been to scared to try it because I just don't know what I would do if it all went down. BUT, as I design my next site, I will use the info he sent me....I still have it saved.

Linux I believe. I created http://landscapesolns.com with the same program butt I do use godaddy hosting - still uploaded through the ftp: method. It worked very well. The hosting even expired a few weeks ago and I had no problem uploading it again under the new hosting account.

So I really am left puzzled why I can't get it to work with this differnt hosting company. I do everything the same way but nothing seems to work right.

Oh, did you do your DNS thingy... Did you point your domain to the Domain Name Servers your web hosting provider told you too?
Yes, I think so? I mean, you have to do that for ftp: I believe???

Go to GoDaddy and find the spot in your account for "name servers".
You do not want to "register" name servers, you want to change them.
You need to change them to your new host like
          NS1.newhost.com
          NS2.Newhost.com
(your new host should have sent you their name servers when you signed up.
Your pricing is a bit high ($12) for a simple lawn site. Also be advised Publisher seldom works. You may get lucky but often images & text will be all "out of whack" compared to the way you made it.
Publisher does not really make a web site. A "normal" web site has folders for things like images and such then files for your page content. In Publisher it generates a TON of files in one big folder and then it's "unique" Microsoft language tells it to get the photo from file 2114.htm and put it hete on page 211.htm and such. It's a nightmare, displays really crazy in non-MS browsers (like if the person uses Firefox or anything besides IE)

Just a heads up. Publisher says it makes web sites, and they look fine on your PC, but don't count on it on the web. Also you can't edit tags & such to get things like you want on the search engines.

For less than your $12 you can find many hosts who offer good website builders with hosting (included) that are as simple as using a word processor (like this forum -- click "B" for bold etc.

No, you need to go to your GoDaddy domain name area and look for "Name Servers" you don't want to "register" one, just change the ones that are there.
Your new host (kind-of high priced) should have sent you their name servers to use like
            NS1.theircompany.com
            NS2.theircompany.com
You must change the ones that are on your domain now inside you GoDaddy account page (the GoDaddy ones) to whatever your host told you. (there may be spaces for more but unless your host tells you different all you need is 2, if you change the 2 and there is an NS3 or more just delete those)
After you make the change within a few hours (up to 24) it should take effect. Then you can work with your new host.

Also be ready. Publisher doesn't really make "web sites" it kind-of fakes them using non-standard "Microsoft" gibberish. Sometimes it works (rarely) but often things will be all out of place compared to where you had them, photos over text, things out of line, etc...
(Publisher creates a LOT of strange files it must refer to to make web pages (one page might need 10 or more of these files and I have seen Publisher sites with over 100 of the files!) and any one of those out of place & everything is a mess.
If you saw the file structure of any "stock" web site (FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Coffee Cup or especially hand-coded) you would see they & Publisher are as different as night and day; and although all the other methods would be different here & there in "their way" you could see many similarities standard to all web sites... not one with Publisher.
It MAY do ok for Internet Explorer but even there it's doubtful, in other browsers it will definitely be a mess.

Publisher "claims" you can make web sites easy but it just isn't so. Funny in like 1996 the old Publisher would make a halfway workable site (not good mind you but it would do what it claimed) but with the new versions I have never talked to a client who could make it work, so I tried myself and couldn't after talking to about 50-100 very upset people thinking it was problems with FTP or something else when uploading.

If you're unsure whether your web server hosting is Linux or Windows, the file naming conventions for the home page differ slightly between them.

For Linux hosting, the home page typically uses "index.html" or "index.htm".

For Windows hosting, it's usually "Default.htm" or "Default.html".

Before you can access the home page, ensure you've configured your DNS server settings correctly. This involves pointing your domain to the DNS servers provided by your web hosting provider. Once that's set up correctly, you should be able to find and access your website's home page.

The problem is, even though the FTP upload says it's successful, when I visit my website, it still shows the old "parked" page from HostXYZ, like the domain isn't linked to the new hosting. I'm no expert at this, so I’m not sure if it's a DNS issue or if I’m uploading the files wrong. Any advice on what could be going wrong? Thanks in advance!
