• Need some help from the Computer guys..C drive

I have seen a lot of good help from you guys over the past few years so I hope you can help me!
I"m pretty bad at defraging my pc so the other day I got a pop up stating I only had 1% C:drive left and that I should run a defrag and disk clean up. So I go to do that, clean up went fine but when I went to run the defrag it told me it can not do a complete defrag unless I have 15% of avalible c:drive avalible.
Ok, so I did all I could deleting this and that a gained a wapping 3%. So I went out a bought a huge 500gb zip/deck plug in drive. I was told to transfer everything to the drive and I would be able to run all my programs from that. Well, I must be doing something wrong or they didn't know what they were talking about. So I have dropped $175 bucks on that and I still only have 3% avalible space left....... any help on freeing up some space on my c:drive.... the pc is only 3 years old and I don't have a lot of programs on it?????? Only thing different in the last month is I added Itunes and my daughter has been using it for her webkins thing. Help!!!!

thanks,
bt

I've never ran across that exact problem before...

Legal Disclaimer...
Please remember you have a existing problem, I'm just a redneck on the Internet & I'm guessing at what the problem is. I can not, will not & can't be held liable in any shape, form or fashion for any problems you may develope, weather it quits, blows up, glows green or completely quits working. Besides that folks on the Internet will tell you anything just to see if you'll fall for it too...
:alien:

Do you think you've cleaned up more than 15% of the hard drive?

Did you try numerous times doing a defrag? What OS are you running?

>>>>>My daughters computer got to where it wouldn't boot up & run for about 5 minutes, then the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) would appear. I tried to defrag about 5 or 6 times before it quit shutting down on me & I think it took around 6 hours to defrag. PS I defrag at least once a week!<<<<<

If you have system restore enabled over a period of time you can probably knock out a few Gig's disabling it, if you have hibernation enabled you can knock out a 1/2 to a Gig there. You can always go back & in the same number of clicks it takes to disable those features, you can enable them after you get your system going again.

I would rather you try the above before we get into messing around with the new hard drive? There's a lot of mumbo jumbo replacing your systems hard Drive properly.

Holler at me & let me know what's going on.

Thanks for the hlep... I'll try it. I wasn't going to replace it just use the external H.D. to put any or all file on. I'm running XP.

Thanks... have to wait until I get home!

With that much HD space used up i'd bet there's a virus on there somewhere... Trojans will eat up space like that.

Steve,
PC is running just fine. No extra fan use, I wouldn't even know thier was a problem if I didn't run a d-frag.

:laughing:The disclaimer applies to me also but im to lazy to type it now......

I think you probably had the cache and temp file settings off and every page you've clicked on is stored in your computer.....

I'm guessing of coarse but this page may be helpful as a last resort.....

Your PC storage capacity

Sounds like you need a new PC. Dump what you have on your current one...into a new one. Your Computer should NOT be that full unless it is a Dinosaur or you are using it for storing "stuff" that are made of huge files.

Up date: PC is fine. Down to 58% free space. I have no idea what happened but after a few weeks of running defrags it was able to clear it's self up and I have had no prob. since. So I'm just making sure I run the defrag. weekly.

I usually run defrags 1-2 times a week....

The 1 time i forgot and let it go about 3 weeks all of a sudden i couldn't get any youtube videos to load.....

For some reason i guessed to check to see if the drives needed defragmenting , and sure enough it was the 1st time the message poped up saying C:/ needs defrag....

I did 2 defrags 1 after the other , then went back to youtube and the same videos that would not load at all instantly loaded and played.....

Since then i do a defrag every other day and when it says it doesn't need it anyway it still moves a file or few and takes seconds to complete instead of a half hour.....

Tanky.....

Some basics

Some basics if your trying to free up space of course you disc clean up and remove all those unused programs and don’t install any free downloads of the net they are full of spyware. To keep your pc running well ensure you have all these and make sure there all regularly updated and run at least every few weeks.

Install security software and update it regularly. I a free one that can be used for non networked pc’s

Download PC operating system updates. Dump older systems such as Windows 98 or 95 in favor of Windows XP Professional and Vista, which is more secure. With Mac, go to OSX.

Make wireless networks secure. Wireless networks use radio links instead of cables; they are more vulnerable to hackers. Encryption technologies such as Wi-Fi Protected Access can help.

Use ad aware and spy ware removal programs that can scan your pc and remove unwanted software that can cause a security risk and slow down your computer.

Backup your data regularly I use a web based system so it’s of site if something were to happen. Could you oprate your lawn route if your pc took a dump and you didn’t have a back up????
