  • Your thoughts on Lesco mowers, please

I am going to buy a new walk behind this season, and was giving a little thought to the Lesco brand. I am looking at a 48" fixed deck, hydro drive, 17hp Kawasaki with electric start. Price is around $3500. I have looked at every brand out there, and this seems to be a decent mower, especially for the money. The Exmark equivillent is the Viking. But it is only 15hp and is pull start. Price tag is $4800. Any input would be much appreciated.

Good dependable, cheap mowers. They are good for the money. Should be ok with a fixed deck for a 48". Any bigger you might want to look at a floating deck. They are built pretty stout, don't thin you would have many problems, just a basic mower.

I picked up 2 last month. One was a 48" with the 17hp. The other was the 52" with a 19hp.

I demoed them and couldn't find anything bad. Now keep in mind, we run all Toro mowers and are use to the T-bar and floating decks.

But many of the guys have used pistol grips at other companies, so I don't think there will be a problem. And for the price, it's worth a shot.

Please understand that Mr.Skaper's "thoughts" relate to Anarchaic Fixed Deck Units.

While these units may be acceptable for mowing low rent commercial fast food joints such as Arby's and Popyes they will not be efficient on more challenging residential accounts.

Uh, yeh, that's because he's asking about the fixed deck units from Lesco.

            Very observant Jack.

I ran a fleet of Lesco Mowers, and had great service from them. I ran the outfront 52" Z and the 36'' belt W/B's. They shared the same blades, casters and wheels. When they discontiued the outfront, I went to Walker.

Why anyone would want a deck supported by chains, I don't know.

If you can't mow undulating terrain without scalping one side, yer a Mo-ron......

For a hydro at the price quoted? Its a great buy. at a G more it'd still be a good buy.

I bought a used 52" (fixed deck, gear) last year and it gives a really beautiful cut . . . on flat ground. I just wanted a cheap mower for some rentals and what I got was a very well constructed machine that I am afraid to use on my nicer accounts. 52 is way too big of a deck to be fixed but for some of these crappy rentals I mow it is fine and faster than my 32--It just requires extra concentration when there are hills or holes. One other complaint is that the pistol grip controls (and horsing it occasionally in reverse) sometimes give me blisters (I'm spoiled by a t-bar).

I've been wondering about Lesco's hydro floating deck unit. At $1300 less than the Exmark I'm considering it is very tempting . . .

sjchlenker, the newer 52's have the wheels spaced out much farther. The actual deck overhang is .5" less than the 48" model at only about 6".

That's where I went to get this price. Do you ever have any problems with having your mowers repaired there, if need be?

The only major work I've had done there was a carb replacement on the 15 Kaw on the 48". It took a long time. I should have known better and had the engine work done somewhere else. They have most parts in stock for the mowers though. I've never had to wait more than a day or so for parts. I have all Kaw engines and buy my engine parts elsewhere.
