  • Scag Walkbehind Prices

I'm a beginer in the business and really would like a nice walkbehind. I've heard nothing but good things about Scag and thought they would be worth looking at espicially since there is a dealer close to me. What I was wanting was a price for a hydro walkbehind with a 61" deck. I know that sounds like a big mower for someone who is just starting out, but 4 of my yards are 4+ acres, and i'm tired of spending all day on them.

Also since I'm only 17 and some dealers might try taking advantage of me, so I just kind of wanted a price to compare to.

If anyone has had past experiences with this type of Scag mower PLEASE HELP!

    thanks

Start out by getting a new screen name! Just kidding.

Welcome to the forum. Start out by reading as much of the information on this site as you possibly can. Take the good stuff and learn from it. Have a good laugh at the rest and just accept the goofballs as entertainment. If you have specific questions use the search function. I bet you find out what you want to know.

I don't know anything about scag mowers except what I have read here. Sorry.

i think i'm in the ball park, when i say this mower is gonna cost ya around $6-7k new.... kinda expensive, huh? with that kinda money ur dishin out, why not buy a ztr (riding zero turn mower)! a ztr will be more productive than an w/b any day, my friend.....

Good luck on the new business venture

We have have two Scag Tiger Cubs, with that size mower I would look at a Turf Tiger or maybe a Wildcat. I think Scag has got a discount on the Wildcats this year so you might want to check them out. Cutting large yards with a walkbehind will wear you out a ZTR will allow you to be more efficient.

Yeah, that's a good point. How much would you expect to pay for a new Tiger Cub or Wildcat? What I have right now is a dixon Ram 50. Its nice and gives a good cut but not built as heavy duty as a commercial Scag unit. Should I trade this in for one of the scags or keep it as well so I have two mowers to run?

cuta above...... do ya plan on cuttin any smaller yards 1.5 acres or less? if so, i think if you already have a dixon ram 50 (is this is a ztr or w/b?) then you should keep the dixon and buy a 48'' or 36'' w/b...... but then again you said 4 of your yards are 4 + acres, please note since you did not note any other accounts yards other than 4 4+ acre lawns its hard to say.... example, if you are cutting 25 yards and 21 of them are an acre or less then it would be more practical to get a 48''-36'' deck then buy another large mower like the 61'' scag.....

I have an 61'' bobcat ztr and i do not use it on anything less then 12,000-15,000 sq. feet..... most customers do not want big mowers runnin around on 3/8 acre size lawns.... due to the fact that some believe big mowers can damage lawns.....
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------
why have two large mowers, do ya run a crew of 2 or more?
i doubt this, due to the fact that you just said you just started.......so why would you keep the dixon and buy a 2nd mower like the scag 61'' that you suggested? back up mower, if this is the case your cash flow must be great..... to be able to support 2 $7k mowers @ the start up of your, business..... i doubt it, thats $14k to be invested in a startup buiz. where are ya getting the cash from to run these expensive mowers?

The dixon is a ztr. I'm actually thinking about the Wildcat or Tiger Cub with a 52" deck to most likely replace the dixon since its not a commercialy built mower. What I really wanted to know was weather or not to keep the dixon.

The dixon came with a B/S ELS engine. 22 HP. I bought it brand new and almost immediately the sump or something started leaking oil. I had that fixed under waranty. One year later while I was mowing It jumped from 3400 rpm (full throttle) to around 4-5000 rpm (i didnt look to see what it was turning as i immediately pulled back the throttle), I took it in and they gave me a new small block. All these problems and only 140 hrs on the damn thing!

I think I should trade it off and buy the Scag w/ 52" deck, but how much should I expect to pay?

look at around $6k-7k, depends on your dealer. Some charge more, some charge less.

the walker walk-behinds are under powered for the bigger decks. There isn't much difference between brands out there, just features and price when you really come down to it.

I think our dealer sells Tiger Cubs with the 48/19 Kawasaki for about $6,300 this year we paid $5,999 last year but there was a price increase. When we bought our Cub's a 52 with 23 kawasaki cost $7,400.

                        Prices

The Scags in my area go for about $6200. I was going to buy one from a specific dealer until I went to one more dealer. This dealer also sold Husqvarnas. They had the same engine a 17hp Kaw. I live in Florida, very wet sometimes. The Scag weighs above 900 lbs. The Husq weighs 780 lbs. I paid $5900 for it with a three year warranty. The Scag had a two year. Also he just sold his last '04 model that I had looked at. So I waited a couple of weeks and got an '05 for the same price with a new deck design and roll bar and a 17hp Kawasaki Kai. The weight issue along with the warranty was why I chose it, plus the dealer is centrally located between me and my accounts. As far as a Scag against the rest for price/performance they are great. Still built like tanks. I know guys in the business that use them and nothing else.
