best tiller

what's the best machine to till the ground with? cant use a bobcat... area is too small. i know nations rent has several machines. the area is about 45x20 with several trees. going to kill the grass and weeds, till it up, maybe remove the old dirt and bring in new fertilized topsil.

any suggestions.

Make sure you get a rear tine tiller. Front tine tillers aren't worth squat.

Or, if that's too small look at renting a Toro Dingo or similar machine with a tiller.

It is not rear tine but I love Stihl's MM55. Easy to handle, lightweight and MEAN. Almost an overgrown Mantis! Wouldn't want to till a HUGE garden w/this model but it ROCKS for bed tilling!

I've rented Troy-Bilt $45 8.5hp per half day. Troy-Bilt's are rugged & strong.

I plan to renovate some large areas this fall too. Bought a new BCS 730 Harvester Plus 8.5hp. for about $2.2K this past winter. BCS is European but are supposed to be comparable to Troy-Bilt's. Supposed to be a bit easier to maneuver. Price wise they're about the same. Don't forget to have your soil tested. Phil posted a link for county extensions located around the country a few weeks back. If you're going to spend the time tilling, you ought to buy good seed. Check out www.ntep.org

I have Troy-Bilt Horse tiller 8 hp, I got it back in 1995 and still going strong. Been through 5 sets of tines and never had any problems. Also I had a BCS 710 tiller, sold it because getting parts was taking a month or more, I had it for 6 months. Now if you want a serious tiller that has no give, get the Barreto tiller, http://www.terracutsupply.com/barreto.html . I have rented this tiller for tilling up very hard ground and it does it with no problems.
