Hey everyone, I am new to the forum and find that you guys are an awsome source of information since I am new to the business and need all of the help I can get. I have been pricing hand blower/vacs vs backpack blower/vacs and am unsure what blower would be best for me to buy and what make. It's main use will be to clean the grass off of sidewalks and flower beds, but I do allot of cleanup jobs and am wondering if a hand blower would be powerfull enough for me to use in the fall since allot of the properties that I do in the fall have small gates that I can't get my rider into with the rake behind it for the leaves. Thanks in advance.

Of course, this all comes down to personal preference. I have decided on the Echo PB602 (throttle on the left). For me, this seems to have the better power to cost comparison. The two that I had narrowed it down to were the Stihl BR420 and the above mentioned Echo...the two are basically thye same price, but the Echo has a slight advantage in power. I tried them both this weekend. Both will do a great job, but the Echo seemed a little more comfortable. Two nearby dealers sell both lines. I would consider the Shindaiwa, but the nearest dealer is quite a bit further away. Just my $.02

From my own experience, I will tell you NOT to buy anything but a backpack blower if you have leaves to deal with in the fall. We bought a hand held when we started and it didn't make it through the first year. You fight with them to get them started and they just don't have the power to move a lot of leaves.
We use a Husquvarna backpack blower. It's really powerful and always starts right up.

Greetings from ScrubVille !
I just picked up my Echo PB602 on Saturday. It has planty of power and is very comfortable. This model is the one just below the 650. It has a side mounted throttle. I intentionally bought this model as this is the setup that I prefer (the 603, for those of you who wish not to be a scrub, is the same as the 602 but with the tube mounted throttle control).
I called around and got a price of $369 from a dealer across Houston and called the dealer closer to me and asked if he would match the price. He said that he certainly would. I am glad because this guy has an excellent shop and great customer service and I would prefer to buy from him.
Now, if I could just get someone to swap me a pink AMC Gremlin for my 2001 F-250 Crew Cab PSD, I will really be set in this lawn biz. I already got the purple spray paint can to paint "Uncle Bubba's Mowin" on the side of that gremlin. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

To say the Stihl 420 is a toy is crazy. I own 5 of them and recently tried the Echo and bought a Kawasaki 700 seires. While it may blow more air, it is not usable air. Yes, it will do better for moving lots of leaves, but not that much better. If it blows 30% more air but has a 30% larger pipe, you aren't able to direct that air exactly where you need it.
I found out by buying the Kawasaki. Very stiff and no where near as easy to move around as the Stihl. And the Stihl moves LESS air, but is still a better machine. You can aim a Stihl from far left to far right with ease. The Kawasaki will nearly be puled off your back doing this. Same with the Echo.
Stihl gets my vote, and I have used alot of them.

Talked to the national sales director for FRADAN the other day and he told me that FRADAN is bringing out a new BP blower in Sept 02 that will be the most powerful BP blower on the market with 250mph and 808 Cfm`s at the pipe!!! WOW! 399.95 vs 500.00 and up for a Shindiawa,Echo or Redmax. HHMMM????

87 pounds! Takes 2 guys to haul it around the jobsite on their back!
Pointing it at any living creature is illegal and considered attempted murder!
Can't wait till they introduce the 500 mph model in 2 years! Wow, easy shrub and stump removal! Just point and blow it out of the ground!
I suppose what they are shooting for is for us to be able to stand at one corner of an acre lot and blow leaves to the other side while sitting in a lawn chair.
It's turning into the deisel domestic truck war by manufactures. Who can pump the most out of an engine but still only haul the sam amount????
Same with a blower. I've used many, and the Stihl is quicker simply because of ergonomics along with quality design and good power.
