  • echo 260 trimmer problem

this thing is eating my line up. a 20 ft. spool in 10 seconds. sometimes you don't even have to bump it. anyway it is out of service. any ideas to what is wrong................

When you pull on the string by hand does it lock, or stop you from pulling it out.

Did a spring not get put back in when the string was changed. Or some crud might be in the way of it settling back into it's right position. There must be something preventing the spool from falling into it's detent, I would guess.

everything works fine in starting it but as soon as it starts and you give it some gas it starts feeding itself line and like i said in 10 seconds 20 ft. is gone chopped up in small pieces. sometimes it waits for that first bump. i got a backup that is the same trimmer and i can't see any difference in the springs or anything else.

Are you able to swap part for part in your backup. I would try that as much as possible to try and find the culprit.

If its not locking back after you bump it, then I would think its a weak spring.

I was wondering if maybe winding it the wrong direction could cause it, so I wound my Redmax backwards, tried it and it functioned fine. It uses a Zenoah head, with a pretty stout spring. It sure seems like I had this happen once to my Echo but I can't recall for sure. If it did, I'm thinking it was due to the main body of the trimmer head not being tightened down on the shaft gearbox all the way. Did you have the head off lately?
