  • Stihl FS46 Trimmer

I have a Stihl FS46 trimmer that is a little over 2 years old and I am honestly ready to throw the thing in the garbage. For months, the bump head on the trimmer has been driving me crazy. I have to stop and rewind the thing 5-6 times every time I trim and I have a small lot. I know I am winding it up correctly. Heck, I even took it to the Stihl dealer and let them wind it once. It did not matter...Still gets stuck all the time.

My solution...Get a new Stihl head and try it out. I bought the Stihl AutoCut 5-2 EasySpool trimmer head and it stopped bumping almost immediately. I used it for 3 minutes and it would not bump anymore. Returned it today!

At this point, I am looking to getting a Shindaiwa or Makita. I mainly want a trimmer that is easy to use for a homeowner. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a Husky 123l and it by far has the easiest head I have ever used. Simple to reload and bumps/feeds without any problems. Get a Husky and you won't regret it.

Seem you have bad luck with Stihls. All Ive used for the past 6 years is Stihls and Ive had no problem with them what-so-ever. I stand 100% behind Stihls.

          Stihl is not the problem...

If Stihl isn't the problem, then why can't any of my local dealers fix the problem! I have taken it to 3 different ones and none of them can fix it. Maybe I just got a dud but Stihl is the problem in this case. It's the last Stihl I will ever own!

Husqvarna is the one you want. Easy to reload heads & light & powerful. Great trimmers.

I have a Stihl FS 76. Used it for 10 years with poly cut heads bump heads and blades and it always worked good, but I don't have anything to compare it to.

What are you trying to do with your equipment?

I have used my Stihl FS 250 very hard for 2-3 years with a different operator most of the times. This means that anyone of my guys picks up the machine and is able to make it work.
I have used every head available and did go through two bump heads.
Now all my guys use the standard bump heads until the job is done.
All I have had to do is buy the backpack harness since some of the jobs take a long time and it is more comfortable for the guys.
I do not know what your use is or what your expectation was , but there is nothing wrong with Stihl. This is all I use for smaller stuff.

I have looked into a replacement for the Stihl FS46 and really like this one by Robin Outdoor Power Equipment. Does anyone know anything about Robin? I think they make Makitas also but that's about it. Thanks for any feedback. The new Husky 125L looks good also (replacment for the 123L).

Are you using high quality trimmer line. I used some cheap stuff once and never will again. The cheap stuff will pull down inside itself and "weld" together. Tried some that was 4-sided for a more agressive cut. Nope, did n't like it either. I use the Stihl brand .080 and like it the best. Maybe someone else will give a preferance.
