  • ECHO or Husqvarna Chainsaw

I need to pick up a chainsaw for the occasional time that I have to chop up trees that have felled on custoemr propertuies. I did (2) today with my pole trimmer chainsaw attachment and decided I need a real chjainsaw.

I am not a tree service company....Landscape and Lawn Care only.......thinking about picking up a Echo or Husq for $200-$300 for the occasional use.

Any recommendations on either brand for chainsaws?

Pick up a used Stihl-but check the compression to determine engine power and make sure it idles with the chain not moving.(Oil seal-$5 ,$150 labor charge to change out).
I own two MS 440s and will buy a MS460 soon. You do not need to buy a new chain saw if you plan on limited use.
E-Bay can provide some great buys.
If your use changes, then you may need to go new-but IMHO, used professional chain saws are better then new home owner stuff.
Used MS 440s can be had for the $300 range.

If you are getting the very small 'limbing' style saws, the Echo is likely better than the Husky. Anything larger, the Husky likely wins by a big margin.

I run a few Stihl models and I love them. But I have heard many many bad stories about new Stihl saws and carb issues. I would probably go with Husky on my next saw.

It's a toss up between Stihl and Husky to start with. Just like the usual Ford/Chevy debate.

I would agree with Scaper, Echo makes a damn good limbing saw (CS-330T and CS-360T); great saw for a good price; If you want a larger saw I would go with a Husky.

            For a midrange saw, I'd buy a Husky 359, or a used Stihl 028, 036, or MS361.
All are good saws, or, if you can find one, a used Jonsered 670 Champ is an EXCELLANT choice. I have a Stihl 024, a Jonsered 670 Champ, a Homelite super 2, and a Mall 7G for BIG stuff. I know the MALL is overkill, but its best to be ready for big stuff. plus I've got a McCulloch 250 with a 34" bar for slightly larger than average wood. if its big, I break out the 7G, or the 250, whichever suits my mood, and start choppin.

Lawn Masters, I could be wrong, but isn't the Jonsered actually a rebadged Husqvarna saw?

I Prefer Stihl. I Have An 038 That Was Purchased In 1984 & Still Purrs Like A Kitten. Granted It Is An Occasional Use Saw But Then When She Does Get A Work Out-it Is Just That. It Is A Bit Much For Light Limbing Though. When I Buy A Smaller One It Will Be Stihl. Just My .02

Yes, you're right about that. they have been that way since the late 80s when full cooperation between the 2 was achieved, Husqvanarna, bought Jonsereds in the early 80's and built some saws, as tests under the Jonsered name, then if it succeeded they built it as a HVA, which is pretty interesting to know.

If you want more detailed info on this, ask me and I'll get it for you from a friend who was in the comapny at that time and did alot of the designing of the saws.
