I need to upgrade my mower for next year. Can you give some advice? I am looking for a zero-turn w/ 52" deck or bigger. My last mower left too many clippings, so I am thinking about a mower that can not only give a nice cut, but also suck up the clippings. I'm new at the business and would appreciate help. Also, where might I find the right mower at the right price? how about used? Thanks.

I will give you some advice which will be against what everyone will tell you. Do a time study on a mower on your average property before you buy anything. If the sections of turf are larger than 10,000 sf you will beat everything with a rider. If the section of turf is less than 10,000 sf, a walkbehind with a velky is faster.
Riders lose a lot of production time in turn-arounds w/o tearing turf and trimming out bed lines and tree rings.
When we did time studies, a 48" walkbehind with a velky out performed a ZTR. The properties were 325,000 sf of turf but it was cut up into smaller areas by sidewalks, buildings, landscape beds, etc. Actually only 2 or 3 areas were really over 10,000 sf of undivided turf.
It's your money, do what you want, a rider looks cooler, but are you in the business to make money or look cool? The old shoe is both a reminiscence and a challenge, for if there have been previous generations enjoying these places, there should be future generations as well. We have work to do, to see that we are not the last. - Don Mitchell 11/1/5
