  • Scag 61' Advantage

I am planning on buying a scag 61" turf tiger to try to stop having to double cut all my big lots with my 48" exmark. Does anyone own a turf tiger? How well does it do on junk yards (trash grass)? Do you ever have to double cut?
    Thanks for any help.

great mowers we use one and the main thing is to keep a sharp set of blades on it one pass should take care of it, the only time we double cut is when grass has got away from us and we try to make it look great

We've got one and it is a turf monster. Spend the extra and get the bigger engine and you won't regret it. We also have the clamshell leaf catcher ($2,400 option) on it. We used to double cut, not anymore! Keep your deck at a higher height. Also helps if its early in the morning or its wet. We do almost 5 acres in about 2 hours on it. Granted there are about 50 trees, a house and barns etc.

      Money well spent.

All I want is less to do, more time to do it, and higher pay for not getting it done.

Why is Mr. Landscaper double cutting all his lots w/the eXmark 48" ?

Jack D. can put an end to that.

The Scag Advantage deck is no improvement over a stock eXmark deck.

You tell me how to put a end to it and I will be glad to do it. But, the yards are only getting cut once every two weeks, and with all the rain last summer, the exmark would not keep up. Always cuts the thick grass good but tall thinner grass it leaves half standing.

Is this a 17hp or 19hp 48"? If this unit has 15hp you are out of luck.

Unfortunately, Jack D. is packing for a week of snow and sand so he must be brief.

If discharging, 2 Low Lift Blades per spindle. Mulching and bagging techniques can be discussed on Jack D.'s return.

The mowe is a 19, but I had the same problem with a 17hp, 44" cut. Also tried doubled blades, it did the same thing but just put finer debri out of what it did cut.

You can put a 350 chevrolet motor on your mower but it still won't cut tall grass in 1 pass. The reason is the deck holds the grass down as it passes over it. You can lower the blades (not the deck), use offset blades, or cut about 3 inches off the front of the deck. You could mow every week. But most likely you'll probably just double-cut like I do. I run 25hp exmark ztrs & I just double-cut when it needs it. Also, keep SHARP blades on, I change mine 3 times some days. I price my jobs with this in mind so I can do a qaulity job for the customer.

Yeah, I unserstand why it want cut all the grass. But, I have been told that being a scag deck has a ton of more room under it than a exmark, it leaves more time for the grass to comeback up so it can cut it off. I went to the local dealler and compared the decks. Exmarks blades almost touch the front of the deck, where the scag's blades have about 8 inches in between them and the front of the deck. The dealer was saying a exmark deck was designed for mulching, and a scag's deck is mainly designed to discharge.

Thats like using the Meg-Mo blades, right?

After a quick search I found my answer! Jack D. seems to know his blades.

That much difference in the decks would have to help.

Kinda of what I thought to, but what to I know? Thats why I was asking people who had experience with scags. I've always ran exmark.

I saw this new mower at the trade show. The rep said that is was to help with wet grass to prevent clumping.

THE 48" ExMARK IS A TRIVANTAGE 4.5" DEEP DECK. THE ULTRA CUT DECK IS 5" AND THE NEW ExMARK DECK IS 5.5".
